In Sympathy Bid, Actor-Turned-Cop Killer Talks

2005_12_lillotalks.jpgThe NY Post has an "exclusive" with Lillo Brancato Jr., the small-time actor who accompanied a friend to steal drugs from an acquaintance's house and was confronted by an off-duty police officer - with the police officer ending up dead. The jailhouse interview, conducted at Rikers, is complete with Brancato's "misty-eyed" proclamations that he did respect police officers and the law, that he had no idea that his friend, Steven Armento, was carrying a gun and that he feels "horrible" over his "stupidity." While Brancato may be genuine in his remorse for Officer Daniel Enchautegui's death, it also seemed like a big plea to the DA's office and any potential jury that he's relatively innocent and an attempt to get his felony murder charges downgraded. If Armento claims Brancato knew he had a gun, it should be a very interesting trial.

Brancato also told the Post that he wanted to meet the Enchautegui family, saying, "I would tell them that if there is anything I could do to help — and I know it won't bring their son back — but if there is anything I could do to make their life easier, I would do it." Two words: Residual paychecks.

He should take it to trial and get on stand. As star struck as most jurors are and the fact that he's a pretty decent actor, he's gauranteed to walk.

I don't think he'll walk. The prosecutor will point out that he's an actor who can act remorseful.

Also: I doubt his lawyer would put him on the Stand.

WAH! WAH! WAH!

He says he would never have let a felon in his car with a gun...yet he would commit robbery?

Please-tell it to the judge.

I hope this guy hangs. I wish the cop had gotten a few fatal shots into him and his "friend" instead of the other way around...

I'm so sick of all these criminals who think they can fake being sorry to get away with their crimes. I'm mean, great for him if he actually does know deep in his soul that what he did was wrong but he doesn't deserve any less punishment because of this. He says he respects police officers, obviously not if he was so blatently breaking the law that they work to uphold. The guy is scum and should be punished as such!!!!

This kid feels horrible and stupid because he got shot and caught; not because an honorable, decent, caring, young man was slaughtered while two junkies were trying to score. PO Enchautegui was the total antithesis of this scumbag.

The press needs to stop giving attention to this clown -- he's about as much of an actor as the Dell dude from a couple of years ago. They should devote time to the fact that the city asks so much from it's front-line police (officers and detectives) yet won't give them a decent salary.

Unfortunately, for all of us, we'll have to probably see some Dinkins-era crime and awfulness before the city truly begins to appreciate what the police department does, and decides to pay its officers what they deserve and what they're worth.

Hold it everyone...no one knows what his intent was that night and whether he knew the other guy was armed. Has this guy ever been violent before? Not that I know of. So let's know judge him now, that's what the court system is for. Funny how all you law and order types focus on order and discard the law. No wonder Bush can get away with all the stuff he does.

Secondly, the reason cops are paid what they are is no different than why Bush thinks 2,000 dead soldiers are dispensible -- No one cares enough to change things. Want to have your taxes increased by 10% ? Didn't think so. So unless you are personally tithing at your local precint, you're part of the problem.

An hour in a locked room with De Niro and Palminteri in character seems like decent punishment. He wouldn't be walking out of there. Or ever again. "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent."

What actions did Brancato take to prevent or interfere with Armento shooting the Police Officer?
What actions did Brancato take to assist the Police Officer after the Police Officer was shot? Did he call 911? What first aid did he perform? Did he attempt to subdue Armento?

homeopt:

He went with him to get Valium-which is a crime in itself-and then broke in with the other guy...Watch some L&O: CI

He better hang!!!

What I want to know is if Vossler got that radio fixed yet.

After reading the article in the NYP on Lillo Brancato Jr. we were encouraged to find Mr. Brancato has finally found a way to clean himself up, to some degree. A life such as the one he aspired to, and obviously still has hopes of returning to, leaves this reader to think he shows no sign of a true repentant heart towards anything he has damaged, past or present. Simply offering to say I'm sorry isn't enough. He touched so many people’s lives, and had opportunity to be a positive example among those who willingly gave themselves to him. We don’t see him acknowledging the hurt, the pain, the guilt associated with such a lifestyle. That creepy macho crap sucks and my family and I agree that there is a man under that dark exterior that resembles the man who quoted Shakespeare in the rain. (What a wonderful performance) Nothing in this article speaks of his humility or intent to do unto others as he would have them to do unto him. His talent we find exceptional, his choices in life ridiculous. We can only pray that in his quiet times, he will sense the need to humble himself, to acknowledge that no good thing comes from an unwillingness to take responsibility for his actions, and to understand the good that comes from a broken and contrite heart. Such a waste of gifted talent.
