Forget the JMZ, the UGG is Back

2005_12_arts_ugg.jpgYesterday WWD had a story on how the transit strike is effecting our fashions. Leave it to them to declare the comeback of Uggs in a "major way". Though the Chicago Sun Times will declare it's the "Reeboks-and-gym-socks-with-your-business-suit" look that have come back in to style. We're they ever in style? And if so, what the hell does the Chicago Sun Times know about what we're wearing during the transit strike.

Reeboks with suits is preferable to the Ugg however. We didn't like Uggs when Kate Hudson wore them, we don't understand girls that wear them in the summer with skirts, and last month DCist gave us alternatives to them. Yes, they're warm. We know. But there has got to be something else out there. So what have you been wearing to keep your toes toasty and your comfort level at an all time high during the strike?

Rockports are the way to go since they are more comfortable than sneakers. And cheaper, too. Too bad I always spill beer on mine the night before.

I'm a Vermont transplant to the city. When I moved here, I brought back a pair of Sh*t-kickers...huge suede and rubber lace-up boots with a fur interior. They're meant for trucking around in the mud and muck on a farm or through high snow banks in the mountains.

Granted the weather has been nice, but my feet have been warm and comfortable for my trek.

I've succumb to the Ugg boot worn under my pants. It keeps at least half of my leg warm. They're not the best looking things, but I have to be pragmatic in times like these.

I've been happy (enough) in my 6-hole Doc Martins - they're comfortable once they're broken in and they look waaaaay better with a skirt than those Ugg monstrosities. O_o

i hate uggs for the same reason i hate anything that causes people to behave like idiots trying to get a pair. i do, however, have a kid who, although is trying to be an independent thinker with her own sense of style, is still a girl at heart who wants to fit in. uggs are like a million dollars or something stupid like that. i bought her "simple" brand boots that look exactly like uggs, are warm and cost about $40 on sale on zappos.com. we bought 2 pair and they are just as ugly as uggs...geez!

Dansko clogs all the way. Been wearing them all week for my walk to and from 52nd & 10th to 23rd & 6th and my feet are happy as can be. There's a reason nurses swear by them.

My only requirement for shoes is that they be comfortable. When I moved back East from SF, I bought some LL Bean boots and LOVE them. My feet stay warm and dry and the soles provide great traction on ice (they also look OK, more like shoes than boots). Those New Englanders know their cold weather clothes!

last time i was in the Chicago Tribune, the reporter worked for the LA Times and was located in New York. hope that answers your question ;-)

my aunt was telling me last night about how she wore Reeboks with her business suit in 1980, and how it actually seemed to stick for a few years.

off topic, but what about the *health* benefits of the strike? people are walking, biking, and rollerblading more than ever. i'm all for it.

Frankly, I wouldn't trust Debra Pickett to know her ass from her elbow much less what New Yorkers are wearing this season. After all, she admits to walking around high on cough syrup.

I hate Uggs. Especially when girls wear them with skirts.

My favorite boots are just the classic LL Bean/Lands end boots with the blue or green toes and the brown leather sides.

The New York Times also has an article today about how the strike is hurting fashion. It's a pretty painful article to read however.

NEOS (New England OverShoes) booties are the best.

I gotta say, I don't like the look of Uggs, but God bless em for keeping my feet warm. They're so comfy and toasty, I wasn't the least bit cold while walking from Brooklyn to Midtown! Huzzah for my Uggs!

I agree with little p - I'm not thrilled with Uggs (or Fuggs - fake Uggs are what I have) but they are super warm and I'm not heartbroken if I slosh around snow in them.

As for this strike, I rocked the New Balance sneakers.
