jefd:jen doesn't ever use spellcheck, and has brain farts at random intervals where grammar is concerned. She and the entire gothamist crew are to be commended for a very diverse slew of content during this debacle; so lets give her/them a pass.

m:NO. In fact we should bitch about it, because at its most basic level it was not only avoidable and preventable, but entirely unecessary. This was imposed upon us rather than being a random act of god.

JC: Although I feel your visceral urges I choose to temper it slightly. Touissant should be locked up for christmas for calling the strike; he still broke the law and should suffer the consequences, including the imposition of stiff fines. As for the rank and file - they are complicit in this, and are not to be held harmless! Merchants and vendors of all walks should refuse to serve them. Seriously a counter strike is called for. They have acted shamelessly and the level greed is appalling. The air of entitlement that they presume disgusts me, and tonight I watched randi Weingarten of the teachers union spew support on their behalf that made ill; all the while double talking her way around the deal she lauded as fantastic for her teachers! It was incredibly disingenuous and insulting to the teachers, the mayor, and the other municipal unions.

Last but not least - make sure proper blame is assigned to the MTA and the Governor. Their actions and lack of are criminal. Don't forget to praise the mayor, the OEM, and the NYC civil servants that stepped up in the hour of need and did a great job. For a city with no control over the striking union, or the agency they serve, we implemented a contingency plan that kept us from deep trouble.

Tim:

whilst crossing the bklyn bridge i saw a few trains crossing the manhattan bridge, and then saw one (F or G) going up over Smith/9th. They all looked empty, though, and the stations were still cordoned off (at 8pm). they may just be moving them to where they need to be to get started but might start up by 1am.

I helped give out the TA packets from 4-5:30pm and they were very popular! Included was a Water Bottle, information about TA and a biking map of NYC (for what lanes actually exist). I emptied 6 enormous boxes of these in less than an hour. Then we had an air pump, gave out Candy and wished everyone well.

There was also an annoying barricade at the southern entrance which was really inconvenient for pedestrians and bikers who had to walk all the way down to 1st Avenue to enter the Bridge. I felt bad for the police guy who had to tell everyone they couldn't jump the fence. It must be one of the lamest pieces of urban planning I have seen in a long time.

I just rode over the Man. bridge and didn't see any TA people handing stuff out - one either end. Last night there was an "emergency air station" - someone with a tire pump, but tonight, just a cop.
