Yesterday, we were admiring the NY Times' interactive map for a possible transit strike. It takes a Google map of New York City and information about HOV lanes, car pool pickups, and taxi zones Now, they've added another component: You can email your commuting story with your starting zip code and somehow they'll add it in. Go, go map fun!
Gothamist wants to know your commuting stories - you can enter our "Most Inconvenient Commute Contest" here (the prize is a redhot Metrocard - we'll probably have to buy it at the Transit Museum, which, by the way, is still open!) And this is a great picture of this morning's Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, found on the Gothamist Contribute, from jukeboxgraduate, tells you a lot.

Here is my "commute" story:
I decided to make a half-assed attempt to go to work and set out on foot for the Forest Hills LIRR station, 3/4 mile from my house. There, I joined the longest line I've ever seen in my life, through parts of Forest Hills I'd never even seen before, to I guess the ticket booth? Who knows. I was hoping to squeeze on a train and not pay. I figured it would be impossible for the conductors to collect the fares plus it's only like 10 minutes from F.H. to Penn. No such luck. Stood in the freezing cold for 45 minutes, trying not to listen to peoples' inane cell phone calls. Gave up and trudged home on frozen tootsies...
This is absurd. The city should fire all these striking bozos, like the air traffic controllers. Then they will learn that they really had a sweet deal after all.
hey: it's funny you chose a screen capture of that particular car pool staging area in greenpoint. i happen to live right there and was expecting to be able to waltz out of my apt and jump in a car awaiting a fourth body. but NO ONE is using that place. there is a guy in a van with a big sign (reading "car pool parking due to transit strike") propped up next to the entrance to the basketball courts where they were planning to park commuters' cars i guess. there were NO cars parked in there. the streets had about the same number of cars parked there as usual. there were even two big bus/van things that were parked, ostensibly awaiting throngs of eager commuters, but no one on board. i biked.
The "planning" for this was non-existant. There is no plan. Being cheerful is not a plan. Taking it in stride is not a plan. Walking to work is not a plan when you like in f&cking Forest Hills and work in Midtown. Getting in a car driven by a complete stranger is not a plan. The f*cking LIRR ruined the only plan I had (squeeze on a train, ride to Penn for free- ha!). How long will my employer put up with me staying home???? Don't know the answer to that one.
