Lou Reed: Photographer!

2005_12_loureedphotographer.jpg

Lou Reed has some pretty New York City photographs up on the Steven Kasher gallery's website, although some are a little blurry. Probably just some residual shakes from 1970s excesses. Artnet has a description of the exhibit:

Famed Velvet Underground frontman Lou Reed exhibits his photographs for the first time in two simultaneous exhibitions at the Gallery at Hermès above the flagship store on Madison Avenue and the Steven Kasher Gallery at 521 West 23rd Street in Chelsea. "Lou Reed’s New York," Jan. 20-Feb. 25, 2006, features over 50 trippy color photographs of city sunsets and the urban night sky, as well as a selection of "idiosyncratic" self portraits. Reed, a New York resident (and companion of musical artist Laurie Anderson), has previously put out a book of his photos; this exhibition coincides with his second, which is published by Edition 7L and distributed by D.A.P. The price is $48.
Can you think of other famous celebrities who are also photographers?

    Lou Reed's photos? Bullocks!

I love Lou, and everything he stands/stood for, but his photographs are a simpe exploitation of his celebrity.

If these weren't taken by Mr. Velvet himself, they would be in the trash.

Lou, you have been famous for MUCH more than 15 minutes...

...save the photography for someone else.

  • Spock takes pictures too!

  • Matthew

The one gothamist posted is great, but the rest are just, well, pretty much what everyone does when they get their first new camera to play with. Hardly worth showing off, let alone putting in a gallery.

    And yeah, Viggo AKA Aragorn.

  • Viggo.

  • Sick Boy

Slow shutter effects! Streaking lights! We haven't seen that from our shitty "photographer" friends before (and we all have friends like that). The only thing missing from this set is the coffee and ashtray still-life, a b&w of a goth girl holding knives, and an old black guy playing chess in the park.

Most of them look like Lou didn't bother to leave the apartment. I suspect many were taken while sitting on the sofa.

agreed -- those photos are pretty weak.

  • eek

nick zinner of the yeah yeah yeahs

david byrne... but isn't "famous celebrities" a little redundant? can you be an "unfamous" celebrity? if so, then i'm one.

  • t.o.m fishpaw

karl largerfeld...linda mccartney...the list is endless...

I remember actor Brendan Fraser having a photography exhibit at the Leica Gallery sometime last year.

    melissa auf der maur,

    christopher ciccone (madonna's bro)...

there HAS to be more...seems everyone is a photog these days.

  • Love Lou Reed. But these photos are weak to say the least. A random clicking through Flickr will reveal much more creative stuff.

  • wrath

why did I even bother going to art school...i'm still paying for the goddamn thing and have nothing to show for it..

  • Bono had a photography exhibit years ago. They were all B&W, if memory serves.
