Map of the Day: Brooklyn Parrots

2005_12_parrotmap1.jpg

Oh hell yes! This is the map we were all waiting for: GoogleMaps + Brooklyn + Parrots! Unbeatable! And bonus points for best location marker in the history of Google Maps Mashups-- those little parrots are just so cute! If you click on each parrot, the map pops up some information and often has a picture of the parrots in that area, along with links to relevant posts at BrooklynParrots.com, the ne plus ultra source for news and information about Brooklyn Parrots. Related: we've been digging some of the recent photo essays at Brooklyn Parrots, and recently did an NYC Bird Blog roundup.

Unfortunately the public utility in Connecticut, United Illuminating, has been trapping and gassing the parrots nesting on their utility poles. The below is from Connecticut-based “Friends of Animals”:

“After helping to gas more 179 monk parakeets in the past month, the United Illuminating Company is continuing its eradication program by tearing down nests. Surviving parakeets will now have to endure frigid temperatures as their homes are systematically destroyed. More than 100 nests in West Haven, Milford, Stratford and Fairfield are under threat.”
