Yes. WS' Peppermint bark is good. The best I have tasted. If the price is too high and you have a Trader Joe's in your area, their peppermint bark is tasty and only $10.

I have a recipe for this that is a bit more involved (just a bit) than Anonymous' version - and looks more like the Williams|Sonoma version. The key ingredient is the Peppermint Oil... It's always a huge hit.

Peppermint Bark

Ingredients:

1 lb (500 g) chopped bittersweet chocolate
8 drops peppermint oil - Try aromatherapy peppermint oil available at health food stores. It tastes much better than peppermint extract.
1 lb (500 g) chopped white chocolate
¾ cup (175 ml) chopped candy canes (smash 'em in a ziplock works)

Preparation

Line an 11x17 baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper. Adjust amounts for different sized cookie sheets. Set aside.
Melt bittersweet chocolate in a heavy pot on low heat, stirring constantly. Stir in four drops peppermint oil or more to taste.
Spread chocolate evenly onto the prepared cookie sheet. Chill until set, about 1 hour.
Melt white chocolate in a heavy pot on low heat, stirring constantly. Stir in remaining four drops of peppermint oil, then add candy canes.
Quickly spread white chocolate mixture over chilled dark chocolate, spreading to the edge of the pan. Chill until set, about four hours or overnight. Break into pieces. Will keep in the refrigerator for 3 weeks.

Too bad it took me a while to post this - no one will even make it down this far... I had a few friends over and we used a recipe off of epicurious to make some of this. I recommend getting top quality chocolate for extra deliciousness...

On Gothamist's recommendation, my Mom and I visited Economy Candy over the Thanksgiving holiday.

They've got Ghiardelli's (sp) peppermint bark by the bar, for about a buck or so apiece.

Very tasty, very affordable, and Mom says they're making a big hit as early stocking stuffers.

EC'll ship them to you in bulk.

I second what anonymous said a while back -- this is the *easiest* DIY project! My sister makes her own, puts it in holiday tins, and gives it as a holiday gift to our extended family each year. It's always the biggest hit. So yummy, and so friggin'cheap and easy to make. Whatever you do, do *not* buy this stuff for $36...

> And I WISH this were an in-blog advertisement, because then I'd have some free things to use as holiday gifts, but alas, no.
****
I didn't know the cost of "journalistic" integrity was a tin of overpriced chocolate. Sorry, but this seems like a blatant ad, ala slashdot.org. Oh well. At least I can't take this site too seriously, unlike the NY Times who were basically running product placement for Mallomars last week. Shame on them.

The bark is good...they're always giving out samples of it at the Columbus Circle WS. I don't think I'd ever buy it (overpriced!), but I'll often stop in if I'm wandering around there on my lunch break and grab a free sample for "desert." I've never seen anyone be pushed to the ground for it, thankfully. But then again, one MUST act civilized at the mall, er, "the shops" at Columbus Circle.

I tried it at the Time Warner Center mall location - it's a bit much. If you are really into minty chocolate, go for it, but it's like an Andes Candy on crack, with chunks of peppermint.

And I WISH this were an in-blog advertisement, because then I'd have some free things to use as holiday gifts, but alas, no.

i am appalled that they are charging so much for something that is the easiest thing to make. melt some white chocolate chips in the microwave. smash some candy canes in a ziploc bag (very cathartic, i might add). mix the candy into the chocolate and spread onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. let cool. done. a 5 year old could do this.

i can't believe there are people out there stupid enough to spend that much money on something so simple.

Jess - Gothamist *is* one big ad. They don't even write stories; they just practice "Mindless Link Propagation".

At least Firefox AdBlock and FlashBlock makes the layout tolerable...

Um yes - this stuff is amazing. I tried some in the Tulsa, OK store, but we decided the price was a little much, so we opted for the knockoff version at a discount store. BUY the WS brand. AMAZING.
