Gothamist was out in the Jersey suburbs recently (yeah, whatever) and visited a local mall for some holiday shopping. After stopping in Willams-Sonoma to check out their overpriced All-Clad collection, Gothamist was shocked at the frenzy being created by samples of WS's peppermint bark being handed out to customers. Women were clammering, pushing, and generally falling all over each other to get a free sample of the stuff. After telling a friend about it later, they decided to pick some up and see what the buzz was all about but it was sold out.
According to the WS website, the peppermint bark is made especially for them. It has a layer of white chocolate, a layer of dark chocolate, followed by a "snowfall of peppermint candy". A set of two packages of the bark goes for about $36.
Anyone ever try this stuff? Is it worth the frenzy? Or even $36? Enlighten us.

It just shows you what passes for excitement in the burbs.
Um yes - this stuff is amazing. I tried some in the Tulsa, OK store, but we decided the price was a little much, so we opted for the knockoff version at a discount store. BUY the WS brand. AMAZING.
they also give out samples of their molten-peppermint chocolate cake which is amazing as well.
Hmmmm, this story seems like an in-blog advertisement if you ask me. does anyone else think so?
$36 for chocolate?!?! please tell me that it comes with a vial of crack or at least a free membership to zipcar or something.
Goes on sale after holidays for $10 or so. Very yummy.
Jess - Gothamist *is* one big ad. They don't even write stories; they just practice "Mindless Link Propagation".
At least Firefox AdBlock and FlashBlock makes the layout tolerable...
i am appalled that they are charging so much for something that is the easiest thing to make. melt some white chocolate chips in the microwave. smash some candy canes in a ziploc bag (very cathartic, i might add). mix the candy into the chocolate and spread onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. let cool. done. a 5 year old could do this.
i can't believe there are people out there stupid enough to spend that much money on something so simple.
I tried it at the Time Warner Center mall location - it's a bit much. If you are really into minty chocolate, go for it, but it's like an Andes Candy on crack, with chunks of peppermint.
And I WISH this were an in-blog advertisement, because then I'd have some free things to use as holiday gifts, but alas, no.
The bark is good...they're always giving out samples of it at the Columbus Circle WS. I don't think I'd ever buy it (overpriced!), but I'll often stop in if I'm wandering around there on my lunch break and grab a free sample for "desert." I've never seen anyone be pushed to the ground for it, thankfully. But then again, one MUST act civilized at the mall, er, "the shops" at Columbus Circle.
Someone gave this to me as a gift a few Christmases ago.. I didn't know until reading Gothamist how much it cost! It WAS delicious... but not 36 dollars delicious! damn!
The chocolate is amazing. My mother sent me two tins for Christmas. Plan on eating the entire thing in a day.
They sell Peppermint bark at a lot of places. There is a shop on w 10th - The Gifted Ones - they have it there, its cheaper, and is very good.
people go crazy for anything that is "FREE"
that crap might have been last years supply
that was sitting in the warehouse for over
a year... be careful of "free" food.

I didn't know the cost of "journalistic" integrity was a tin of overpriced chocolate. Sorry, but this seems like a blatant ad, ala slashdot.org. Oh well.
At least I can't take this site too seriously, unlike the NY Times who were basically running product placement for Mallomars last week. Shame on them.
There is a cheaper version available at Trader Joe's stores.
I second what anonymous said a while back -- this is the *easiest* DIY project! My sister makes her own, puts it in holiday tins, and gives it as a holiday gift to our extended family each year. It's always the biggest hit. So yummy, and so friggin'cheap and easy to make. Whatever you do, do *not* buy this stuff for $36...
On Gothamist's recommendation, my Mom and I visited Economy Candy over the Thanksgiving holiday.
They've got Ghiardelli's (sp) peppermint bark by the bar, for about a buck or so apiece.
Very tasty, very affordable, and Mom says they're making a big hit as early stocking stuffers.
EC'll ship them to you in bulk.
Too bad it took me a while to post this - no one will even make it down this far... I had a few friends over and we used a recipe off of epicurious to make some of this. I recommend getting top quality chocolate for extra deliciousness...

I have a recipe for this that is a bit more involved (just a bit) than Anonymous' version - and looks more like the Williams|Sonoma version. The key ingredient is the Peppermint Oil... It's always a huge hit.

Yes. WS' Peppermint bark is good. The best I have tasted. If the price is too high and you have a Trader Joe's in your area, their peppermint bark is tasty and only $10.
