Volunteering in the City

2005_12_10_soupkitchen.jpgOh, MUG, you remind us of a good point. We're smack in the middle of the holiday season. A time for diners and delis to play constant Christmas jingles (if we never hear about a reindeer again it will be too soon), a time to feel guilty about not being able to get friends/family the Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa/Winter Solstice gift you know they would want (or worse, not having the slightest idea what they'd want). But that's just the tip of the iceberg. It is also as good a time as any to do some good for your community.

If you're loaded and just want to drop some cash to get rid of your seasonal guilt, we've always been a fan of the Times' Neediest Cases (which reminds us, why is there no link to the cases on the Times homepage? Does that strike anyone else as bizarre?). But if you're looking to do some good with your time as well, volunteering is the way to go.

Which brings us back to MUG. Yesterday they put up a nice list of places you can volunteer. The list is purposely short of a lot of options (don't see something on their list you want people to know about? Put it in the comments!), but it offers a good selection of interesting and praiseworthy places to which you can devote some of your time. We're talking everything from the ASPCA to Playwrights Horizons to God's Love We Deliver. Not to mention the volunteer umbrella orgs listed like VolunteerNYC.org.

Personally, I'm a pretty big fan of the Lower East Side Girls Club...

I think the reason you don't see a link to the Neediest Cases on their web page is that they don't really fancy themselves as a New York newspaper, but instead a national one. Although if you have ever seen the National Edition (or the New England, or Washington Edition) of the Times, you would find it a bit thin, as the Metro Section is not in it. It is not good if the Metro Section is where you turn first in the paper, but it is one of those little annoyances when traveling.

The Lower East Side Girl's Club? That sounds dirty, Garth.

New York Cares is the BEST volunteer organization if I've ever worked for in NYC.

The whole system is set up to make it very easy for busy people to volunteer and there's a wide variety of assignments available.

Best of all, you can do everything online (and at the last minute, too!)
