Jets? Heisman?

2005_12_vinnymiami.jpgThe sad Jets host the disappointing Raiders, Sunday at 1 p.m. in East Rutherford. With former Giants QB Kerry Collins struggling, Oakland looks to start the physical Marques Tuiasosopo, who hasn't even taken a snap in game action this season.

On another football note, this is Heisman Trophy weekend, and while the award will be bestowed Saturday night on ESPN from the Nokia Theatre for the first time, tonight marks the annual tradition of the hosting committee taking the top candidates out for an evening on the town here in New York City. Football fans might be interested to know that they will have an opportunity to photograph and/or meet the top three candidates (U.S.C.'s Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, along with Texas' Vince Young) at the ESPN Zone in Times Square at 10:15 p.m. tonight. Sadly, by all accounts, the Downtown Athletic Club, which has presented the trophy for over 70 years is now just a virtual organization, with the club's longtime quarters at 19 West Street having closed in 2002.

Back to the Jets (who it goes without saying, could use any of the three heisman candidates immediately) - Gothamist thinks that Herm Edwards and Brooks Bollinger might catch a little holiday magic and pull one out here, courtesy of the Jets defense - Jets 21-17.

Pictured is Vinny Testaverde's portrait - the only Jet to have captured the Heisman (in 1986 as a Senior at the University of Miami).

The Jets have had the same numbers of Heisman winners play for them as the Knicks have!
