Inside Grand Central

2005_12_artsgct.jpgWhen we hear things like, "and there...a city lies within a city" we get pretty excited. When the city within the city is Grand Central Terminal, we set the DVR right away. Tonight on the National Geographic Channel, Inside Grand Central airs at 8pm.

When we used to commute through GCT everyday for a few years, we always knew there was more to it than we were seeing. Tonight's show will bring us beyond the brick and mortar to show us inside the hidden tunnels, mysterious elevators, secret railways and the terminal's secret operations run from 10 stories below the main concourse.

The structure is always adapting to the times as well. Currently the “East Side Access” project is being worked on, this new underground development will bring in an additional 80,000 commuters from Long Island (just what we need. zing!). So get a glimpse at what the largest railstation will look like in 2012, as well as at all of its historical nooks.

Now now... Not all people who use the LIRR are from Long Island. I take it all the time from Queens.

Don't equate us with those savages.

All this time I thought Queens was part of Long Island?

ZING!

How this whole city keeps from caving in is beyond my understanding.

wonderful! Thanks for this.

This has been on before and it is great. Highlights, the secret track and elevator for FDR's limo and the whisper gallery outside the Oyster Bar.

There is the very good Seven Secrets of Grand Central which airs every now and then on WNYE, and I recall seeing it once on WNET. The latest Secrets of New York on WNYE featured FDR's secret platform and elevator in and what may have been the train car that was used to transport his armored limo.

There is an article in this month's National Geographic about GCT, it is the featured zipcode of the month (10017). There are some really interesting photos and quotes from various workers.

I must say, I was really dissapointed by this show. I can't watch the last half hour. I must have seen the same clips of video, and heard the same statistics repeated 100 times throughout the show.

It's like they spent all the cash on fancy graphics and didn't spend any on actually making a good show.

Two Thumbs down from me :(

Not just this show, the NGC can't touch the history channel. forget bout A and e, they're not worth mentioning.

Macreator, I'm totally with you. My fiance & I just watched it, and kept saying,"Didn't we just see that?"...The editing was so choppy.

On another note, though, we saw the MTA spokesperson from the documentary (the guy with the thick-framed glasses) on the news (not sure what channel) just after 10 pm talking about tomorrow's snow storm, so that was kinda cool.

It seems to be the "style" nowadays. Especially on the smaller cable channels like NGC, Discovery and Travel. Choppy editing, sped up video and constant, inane, drum-heavy "music" are the order of the day. I don't know if it's because the directors were raised as part of the MTV generation or they're trying to target an audience with symtoms of ADHD. I hope it never reaches PBS and Nova.

Brightliner, you totally hit the nail on the head.

A year or so ago, the Discovery Channel did a series called Extreme Engineering which had an episode called Subways in America (mostly about our subway). It was directed and produced with all those hyped up edits and KTU dance music. It had it's moments of oohing and aahing, but was mostly, as you might say, an ADHD affair.

If any of you want to know about GCT, watch Seven Secrets of Grand Central (great show) on PBS for free. And if you want to watch the most comprehensive subway documentary ever then check out Subway: Empire Beneath New York's Streets

did anybody happen to record this? i missed it but i really wanted to see it.
