yeah, yeah, i grew up there too.

re: new buildings at railroad station--they're great! ...but how i miss the old yellow factory sign.

i never went on the bridge, but i remember someone risking life and limb sticking a christmas tree on it. a bunch of my friends have gone out and said it was pretty unsteady.

i hope this plan will happen. every year they make proposals for the waterfront but nothing seems to come to fruition. warias park continues to be beautiful--but desolate and dilapidated. po'town should look to kingston, and the amazing work they've done with their waterfront.

I too grew up in Poughkeepsie, and first heard of this project in 1992, back when I was in sixth grade.

Not much progress has been made, aside being able to walk halfway across from the Highland side.

i grew up in poughkeepsie. i do not remember the fire, but as an idiot young'in i was up on the edge of the bridge. quite a view. the rail used to run as a trolly service from poughkeepsie to new paltz and the mountains, a retreat if you will.
"they" have been arguing about what to do with it for as long as i can remember, but until recently the zoning laws were so stiff that buting a house in the city of poughkeepsie was too hard. now, with the zoning laws more lienient, the waterfront and surrounding areas have become a huge success. a good friend of the family bought an old building at the poughkeepsie railroad station and converted the old delapidated building into offices, studios and a giant restaurant called mahoneys.
it's slow, as all politics are, but something will happen with this bridge.

I grew up in Po'town--sorry, an outskirt of Poughkeepsie--and my high school history teacher was the mayor of the town. That bridge isn't ever going to happen. They've been arguing about the future of that bridge and the future of the Pok. waterfront (which is absolutely beautiful) since 9/11 was a glimmer in Silverstein's eye. Only the East Side subway is a more long-standing pipe dream.

I grew up in Poughkeepsie (stop snickering) and remember the fire. They've been talking about doing something with the bridge for years (most persistent rumor: a restaurant in the middle), so this is just way cool.
