Brand recognition and exposure does not equate Sales. the PSP isn't selling much even after all the NEGATIVE press. It's a myth that negative press is good advertising. Its just what corporate types try to push on there boss so they dont get FIRED. the PSP is not selling. It's being outsold by the Nintendo DS wich had little advertising compaired to the PSP. The fact is the worst the advertisement the worst the sale is going to be. Your just going to remember the ad for how bad it is for much longer!

Graffiti is such a controversial subject. It's one of those things that you can't have but can't not have at the same time. The whole sony thing just adds more to the problem. Yeah, what they did is art, but the reason they did it undermined the whole concept behind graffiti. The average tagger does graffiti , simply because it is art or to make a statement. It's not about vandalizing buildings, or breaking the law it's about making people see instead of look. To make them think and wonder, instead of analyze and classify. To walk by a piece of art on the side of a building wall, to stop and admire, can you honestly say that it would not take away a little dullness on the walk to work. Did you bother to think about the effort and time put into it? Or about the creavity begind it? It's really not as easy as it seems. Now, do not believe me to be all for graffiti, there is some, that I don't approve of course. But maybe people, should look past the bad and admire the good.

The marketing practice of using graf as a form of advertisement has baffled me since its inception. For those that view graffiti as vandalism, the ad would be dismissed as the destruction of surfaces and disregarded... For those that cherish it as art and lifestyle, the manipulation of it to hawk products would be written off as a bastardization and disregarded. So who does this really work for? Don't get me wrong, I loathe out of touch ad execs exploiting street culture to line their own pockets - but I happen to have met the guys that create many of the graf murals out there, including this current campaign, and I find their story both inspiring and completely valid. The Tats Cru was once a bunch of kids vandalizing NYC, hitting trains and walls and any other surface to get their name up and gain respect... When I met them in a coffee shop in the Village 6 years ago, they had formed a company, travelled the world and were running a youth center in Brooklyn (I think) where kids learned about DJing, graffiti (as art) and other constructive ways to spend their time. These men took something that could be seen as destructive and turned it into a CONstructive means of keeping kids out of gangs, out of trouble and teaching them that their culture could take them places. They have made a valid living out of hobby - and what isn't admirable about that? So while we may not appreciate being constantly pandered to - there is a greater thing going on here.

If you want to outlaw corporate graffiti in our neighborhoods, what about billboards, bus shelter ads, phone booth ads, wild postings, mobile truck ads...etc.? We should either outlaw all obtrusive "ad messages", or charge corporations a fee to display them - AND I DON'T MEAN A FEE TO THE BUILDING OWNER. I mean a fee which each neigborhood collects and uses for its residents. Isn't that the quid pro quo of print, TV and online advertising? We have look at ads - but we get something in return. What do we get from any outdoor advertising??????

LAF Brightliner. Here are the breaks. When I meant doing it right I didn't advocate Sony using real graffiti/fake graffiti or any kind of graffiti at all. I'm saying they should ask their marketing company to think of something a little bit more clever then the tired old street art game. Oh and to your dismay I support graffiti, especially unsanctioned, as long as its good. I think its a necessary in a so called free and open society and in the end has spawned more good then bad. For christ sake it represents one of the first American art movements started by kids for kids. In that alone there must be some merit. It has also had major influneces on pop culture on a whole. Sure its illegal and its vandalism, too bad! It's the ultimate manifestation of free speech and if you make you feel any better we can refer to it as a necessary evil.

Getting angry about Sony's "graf" only makes the situation worse. Sony has obviously paid to put up these advertisements -- everyone in the corporate marketing world seems to have learnt their lesson after the IBM/Linux fiasco involing pseudo-spray paint that many people thought was permanent. Sony wouldn't do this illegally. That said, Sony doesn't risk anything here and stands to gain much. The more people complain about the images the better, as more people actually end seeing them. Think about it, the brand identity of the actual image is relatively superficial. We've never seen these characters before, the only identifiable thing is a line drawing of the PSP. It'd be one thing if it was Crash Bandicoot up there, or whatever other identifiable Sony icon is left, but the icons are anonymous silly children. Sony has nothing to loose if people deface these ads with blood and cursing as there's no value to the identity and therefore no value in the images. So by ranting and reposting photographs we're only really working to further Sony's goals, and consequently, proving that this socalled "guerilla" marketing tactic actually works. Sony simply wants people talking about their product, and nothing more. The maxim obviously being "no press is bad press." So before you get too upset about how Sony is co-opting the paradigm of street-art, think about how they might have already won this battle simply by getting you to post about it on your blog. My suggestion? Walk away and ignore the corporate stuff. The debate is only so interesting, and doesn't hold much intrinsic appeal to those who are actually following the scene. The people participating, the writers hired by Sony, and the ones complaining about the ads, don't need to and won't be part of the real street art narrative.

Gosh... so many of you commenters are just so blind and dumb. You completely miss the point and then go off on your own tangents. There appear to be two problems that bother both the folks at Wooster and Gothamist. It has to do with the fact that the ads were designed to look like and mimic graffiti and street art and that these ads are not going up on just spots usually reserved for wild postings or what is commonly referred to as wheat pastings. They are going up in spots that usually don’t sell or rent advertising space so that the ads appear to be unsanctioned and/or illegal. The fact that Sony is trying to post these ads up as if they were graffiti is the problem. If you don't think there is a thin line between getting it right and wrong well then you never worked on a pitch and certainly never executed one. Advertising and marketing is a funny business and a lot of common folk don’t really understand the small details and dynamics it takes to actually make ideas and concepts that are cool, effective, and don't piss off the creative community they are trying to reach in the first place. When dealing with youth culture (and graffiti especially) make sure you know what the fuck you are doing. For example you can always hire ANIMAL as a consultant (that for e.g. was a blatant plug) to review the “urban marketing” campaign that has been created for your brand by some "urban marketing" company in some ivory tower. But what bothers me on a bigger scale is that many brands see graffiti as the only medium to reach kids in the city. It's their golden fleece of urban (not meaning black) communication and they often misuse it and get it wrong. And for all that bullshit about ad blockers and stuff, again you missed the point. Take it from someone who publishes an art and lifestyle magazine with the tagline "cashing in on culture" that this is by no means a wholesale refutation of advertising, sponsorship of art or culture, or the usual predictable banter. It's just about doing it right, period.

The bottom line is if the police knew the identity and address of someone who illegally painted all over the city, that person would be arrested. Here we know exactly who is behind this shit, and nothing will happen to them. If the city wants to waste tax dollars on anti-graffiti initiatives they should sue corps like Sony to offset the cost.

I can't believe I agree with Brightliner, but I do. It seems gothamist has a problem with Sony's graffiti because it's corporate. Never mind the fact that they got approval from either the city or building owner (likely both). 99.999% of graffiti is vandalism and crap. The other small percentage belongs to those that stick to canvases and areas they get permission to put graffiti on. This whole pro-graffiti thing by Gothamist is b.s. Can I come take a dump on your all's couches as long as I call it art?

Are the building owners being paid to display these ads? If so, then by messing with the ads we're messing with the little guy's income, which doesn't seem right either. If not, then Sony ought to pony up--removing tags, corporate or otherwise, costs a fair amount of money. Sucks to be the guy who pays the fine for not cleaning up graffiti fast enough, and the paint to cover it isn't free. The word "streetart" always makes me think of SweeTarts.
