This past weekend, the city's main post office, the James A. Farley branch started its annual Operation Santa program. The post office receives thousands of letters to Santa from needy children, and people can pick up a letter (or two or ten) and give gifts to the children. You can get letters one of two ways: (1) Go to the Farley Post Office (8th Avenue at 33rd Street) in person to pick from the letters in person; or (2) call 877-840-0459 to have letters sent to you (you can also pick what boroughs your letters come from...and you'll receive a confirmation number!). We're going to be Secret Santa to some kids this year, because everyone needs a little Christmas.
This Daily News story shows how heartbreaking the letters can be (some just want blankets..some just want diapers for their baby siblings!) and here are some photos of people perusing the letters on Newsday. You can also donate to the Operation Santa party, where children are invited to celebrate the holidays; mail a check to:

Thank you.
Thanks, Grammar Nazi, I'm glad you got the point of the article.
Yeah, Jennifer. Sure, the sheer amount of typos and grammatical mistakes on this site used to bother me too, but I have come to realize that it just wouldn't be Gothamist if not for all the errors, misused words and incomprehensible writing.
It's like listening to Harry Caray call a Cubs game - you come here for the goofs.

One thing that should be mentioned is that Operation Santa is only open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. I hate when someone advertises charitable events and doings without disclosing all the facts. We had a huge line of people at the Post Office today at 6:00pm wondering where Operation Santa was. The security guard mentioned the shortened timetable. Most people were a little upset as this is a ridiculous timetable for New York as this is when most New YOrkers are at work. I find that gothamist often leaves out information like this or does not fully research the issues. This makes me mad!
