Christmas Tree Lighting Tonight

2005_11_rocktreeup.jpgTonight is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, which is why today is a gridlock alert day. The WNBC Channel 4 Christmas Tree page and tree cam now has music, as they count down till 7PM. We're sure crowds are already at Rockefeller Center, breathlessly awaiting Al Roker, Sheryl Crow, Il Divo, Carrie Underwood, Il Divo and the Goo Goo Dolls, but the other way to watch is to tune in at 7PM and watch Channel 4 for two hours, and TiVo America's Next Top Model. And if you go, we'll be looking for your pictures on Flickr!

And don't miss out on finding out where you can buy a tree, with our Christmas tree map.

Photograph of the tree being raised three weeks ago from Van Cleve on Flickr; there's also a cool set of these photographs

Asides from causing gridlock and making traveling miserable for mid-town workers, who the f**k cares anymore about the tree lighting, besides tourists?!

here in chicago, we call it the HOLIDAY tree whoopeee....

Well, if your office faces Rock Center, that would be pretty sweet. But it's true: No one should ever enter the scrum at Rockefeller Center after the tree lighting, because it's like being sucked into a black hole.

I once had to do something at Rock Center one lovely December day a few years back and it was filled with gawking tourists, this was after the tree was up. If you can avoid the Rock Center area in December, it is a good idea. If you can't its sort of like riding the Lexington Avenue IRT at rush hour, but a bit worse, since there are random tourists stopping and gawking at random stuff.

NYC sure hates its tourists, doesn't it...
