Help Needed: Christmas Tree Locations

2005_11_rockcentertree1.jpgLast night we received an email from Ricky, asking for help. It read in part:

Gothamist should publish a list of places to get trees in the city. I could have used one tonight and there were none online (at least that I could find).

I’ll start:
- west broadway and worth
- 6th ave around spring street

This led to a fruitless hour of searching Google for a list of Christmas tree retail location in the five boroughs. No dice! But when life hands you lemons, we at Gothamist make lemonade. Please add the locations of all Christmas tree vendors that you know about, and we'll try to make a Google Christmas Maps Mashup. all of broadway pretty much from 59th street up. but i guess that doesnt help you downtown hipsters who consider anything over 14th street going "upstate." No trees for you!

Corner of Bedford and 7th in Williamsburg, right infront of the Salvation Army.

in Williamsburg: Bedford Avenue and North 7th St.

In manhattan: on 1st Avenue West side, between 22nd St and 20th St. Right in front of a supermarket.

oh yeah and there is usually one every year on Avenue A and 12th or 11th St. where the flea market takes place.

"This led to a fruitless hour of searching Google for a list of Christmas tree retail location in the five boroughs."

lol, tree vendors are for the most part canadians who come down for the month and set up on the street. they live in their vans, its a cash business, they pack up and leave when theyre gone. they dont have websites. theres not really such thing as a "Christmas tree retail location" in New York, maybe in the burbs, but not in manhattan.

on 8th ave at jane street (below 14th)

My entire life my family has gotten our very last minute "christmas/jesus h. christ what kind of self-hating jews are we"-tree from the guys who sell 'em on the corner of 5th Street and 1st Ave.

And my roommate says they saw 'em being sold the other day on the corner of Union and Metropolitan.

This sounds like a perfect use for a Google Map Mashup thing. Or if you don't want to actually make one, http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap/

8th and Jane

hudson and 13

In Park Slope they sell 'em in fromt of the CVS on 9th St. btw 5th and 6th and at various churches along 7th Avenue (def. the one around 7th/President). What I need is a sucker to help me lug one home.

Greenwich and Chambers Sts.

P.S. The RSS feed through feedburner sucks. It updates slowly and when you click the RSS link to view a post, it rarely loads.

Last night, I saw a bunch out for sale at Tompkins Square Park, on the Avenue A side between 9th and 10th. Can't miss it if you're in the area.

west side of tompkins square park.
astor place outside of barnes and nobel.

Try B'way & 110th/111th St. I'm not sure if they are open yet or not but they will be very soon-it's right by the (1) 110th/Cathedral Parkway Subway-NW corner.

The bodega in my old apartment building always sold trees out front - I don't live there anymore, but check out the corner of 20th and Park.

in Manhattan on 2nd Ave and 19 Street.

If you're around Greenpoint, I recommend the place on McGuinness, close to Greenpoint Av (can't remember the intersection). They tend to have the freshest trees at the best prices, with a nice variety of sizes and types.

And to sp: I guess this doesn't help you Manhattan folks...no reasonably-priced trees for you!

In Astoria there are usually a few places on 30th Ave, near the N train (30th Ave and 33rd St)

There is a van full of wookies selling trees in front of Balsley Park on the east side of 9th Avenue between 56th and 57th streets.

There is usually a set-up on the corner of 14th and 1st. They provided me with trees for many years. And they are open pretty late. There is also usually a tree vendor at the Saturday Union Square Farmers' Market.

Astor Place, between Broadway and Lafayette, in front of Astor Wines.

Upper East Side:

1st Ave between 81st and 82nd Streets

1st Ave between 67th and 68th Streets

In Manhattan:

86th Street - between 1st and 2nd Avenues, in front of the Gristede's.

Amsterdam Ave @ 82nd St.

There are another two for you.

In Astoria: on Broadway at 30th street, in front of the C Town. 1 block from the Broadway stop on the N/W

They're also being sold in Park Slope in front of the Key Foods on 5th Avenue (between Douglass and Baltic Streets).

The cheapest place to get them is Home Depot in Gowanus, Brooklyn. 20 bucks for a tree! In Manhattan you'd easily pay $100 for something half the size of the beautiful trees I've gotten there.

In Kensington, BK - great nursery on Caton Avenue and 7th Street. They have a great selection of trees and excellent service. I got a gorgeous tree last year for about $40. They also have all of the accoutrements.

In Astoria, at the 30th Avenue station: Walk two blocks east from the station. Outside the RiteAid and the Key Food, there are trees being sold from now until Christmas! That's where we got "Margo Tennenbaum", our tree last year. This year? "Margo II: Badder than Bad"!

user-pic

trees are sold all over the city, but from the responses here, it seems it woul dhave been more useful to ask for a survey of tree prices throughout the city. The BK crew seems to think they have the best prices, so, what are the price/size/species ratios out there? That would be much more useful.

in manhattan: SW corner of 49th and 9th (corner deli); $20 for any size

Spring and 6th! A huge lot in the park.

In Washington Heights, at 181st Street and Magaw Place, next to the church.

Oh duh, should have read the post more carefully. . .

E. Houston and Allen. They were there last year, maybe they will be this year.

There's a vendor at 84th & Amsterdam advertising all balsam fir trees for $25. It was raining so I didn't cross the street to take a closer look.

Also, biggest selection I saw on my walk home was on Columbus next to the American Museum of Natural History

Essex and Houston. If it's the same team as in previous years, they are cute and funny Quebecois.

GREENPOINT:
Manhattan and Calyer
Greenpoint and McGuinness

W'BURG:
Union and Metropolitan (basically, at the Lorimer L stop, across from Kellogg's)

we've plotted all the points above on our special xmas tree map: http://www.wayfaring.com/maps/show/1263

please add your points over there, or in comments on this new gothamist post: http://www.gothamist.com/archives/2005/11/30/help_needed_chr_1.php

Home Depot in Clinton Hill off Nostrand. 11205

$30 for 9.5ft trees.
