A Season that Doesn't Make You Wanna Shoop
Apologies to Salt-N-Pepa, but it's clear that Columbia University was not happy with the Lions' head football coach, Bob Shoop. Shoop was fired Sunday morning after a dreadful 2-8 season (Hey, they have the same record as the Jets!). Columbia University's athletic director M. Dianne Murphy said that it was "necessary and appropriate to make a change in leadership at this time." Shoop's team was also last in total points scored and allowed in the Ivy League this year.
The Lions started the season out with two wins, but dropped eight in a row, including seven losses in the Ivy League. A 2-8 season and tighter rules for tailgating before the games, no wonder there needed to be changes. In his three seasons as head coach, Shoop was 7-23 and 4-17 in the conference. No matter how small your school, Gothamist can completely understand a coach being fired for a record like that. Apparently, a national search is underway for a replacement.

I must say, I sat through the whole game against Brown this past Sunday and watched a poorly coached team with little hope for next season. (Hey, it was the one Columbia football game all year I get to watch on TV).
I feel bad that the underclassmen and Juniors had to live through this poor coaching. I feel even sadder that the Seniors had to go through 3 years of this.
I can only hope that new AD Murphy can find a real coach who can recruit from amongst the best and brightest out there, even if we can't give them athletic scholarships!
ROAR, LIONS, ROAR!!!
