More More More Cube Cube Cube

If the freezing cold weather is keeping you from taking the refurbished Alamo cube for a spin, you can still follow the fun on the Flickr "astorplace" tag. Also see the rest of Jesse Chan Norris' pictures from yesterday. Can anyone report on whether the cube is spinning more smoothly now? When the cube was first built, the base contained ball bearings, so the sculpture could turn insanely fast, but they had to take them out because the city was scared people could be hurt. We're pretty sure they didn't put them back in during the refurbishment, but just stripping off the rust and dirt would probably enable much faster rotation, right? • it was spinning quite nicely the day they unveiled.

  • It was pretty hard to turn today, but that may have been because of the cold. Two of us managed to get it going well enough to be cheered on by passersby, who seemed very happy to see that the Cube had returned.
