To The Five Borough, Pizza Style

2005_11_lifewinner.jpg

Yesterday, LIFE Magazine held a "Battle of the Boroughs" pizza contest to determine the best pizza in New York. Competing for the trophy were DeMarco's in Manhattan, Joe & Pat's in Staten Island, L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn, Louie & Ernie's in The Bronx, and Singas Famous in Queens. Because it involved pizza, Adam Kuban from Slice was there, not only to cover it, but as one of the judges. Adam writes that the pizza was judged on five factors, "Presentation (worth 20%), Crust (20%), Sauce (20%), Cheese (10%), and Overall Quality (30%)" and that the pizzerias were selected on the LIFE website a few weeks ago. Seems like there are some odd choices to the bunch, but so it goes. The eventual winner was DeMarco's from Manhattan. Pretty impressive for a new establishment that had mixed reviews after it opened.

What do you think the best pizza in the five boroughs is?

tony's on graham really does have a super-dope slice. way better than carmine's across the street.

  • >> Slice should know better than to judge a pizza competition that does not include DiFara

As you know, you go to judge with the pizza you have ...

Besides, I think I'd have to recuse myself from any contest involving Di Fara to avoid personal bias. I just love Dom's pies too much. And I didn't know until the day before which pizzerias would be in the contest. It was fun to take part, and I'd pretty much judge in any such competition, even if it were for "Best Frozen Pizza" or "Best Chain Pizza" just because how often does a person get to do that sort of thing?

The best pizza is at DeGenerico's, on 123 Fake St. Also, the best bagels are at Justanother Bagel Place, at 456 Fake St.

DiFara's... its far, and it feels like forever to get a sicilian, but its THE best. Plus they got the San Benedetto Peach Iced Tea to quench your thirst. Perfection.

For the record, brooklyn takes the "pie" on all levels. here is the list.

personal favorite: San Marco's in Brooklyn.

objective favorites: both L&B (the spumoni rocks) and Di Fara's (buffalo mozzarella, come on, how do you get better than that)

DiFara #1 followed by, a close second, Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn bridge.

I don't know about pizza per se, but the best bruschetta i had so far was in Tony's near Graham street in Brooklyn. And yes I partially agree to "subjective" comments, however I live in Jamaica,Q. And the place on Woodhaven and Jamaica crossing seems to be pretty good.

Once you DiFara, you never go back.

  • never been to joe and pat's (though i will soon!), but Lombardi's and Koronet's are my faves in Manhattan. mmmmmmmm, pizzaaaaaa....

  • zach

In Manhattan, it's either Sal and Carmine's on 101st and Bway or John's.

  • La Casa Bella, on Cropsey Ave in Brooklyn, is far and away the best pizza in NYC.

  • Pizzaexpert

MT you're nuts. That is roach pizza, watch them while they crawl the walls in that dump. Are you the owner? Joe and Pat's is the best pizza in New York. I highly doubt you've been there if you compare it to chain pizza...

  • dirtgirl

DiFara, absolutely. nothing else comes close.
