The Body Exhibition

2005_11_cadavers.jpgThe NY Times has a good summary of issues surrounding the human cadaver exhibit that is opening up at the South Street Seaport this weekend. (See? They take the fish away and bring in dead bodies.) Basically, the controversy is whether or not the bodies for BODIES: The Exhibition were legally obtained: All the bodies are from China, where the law runs fast and loose, with some groups suspecting the 22 bodies on display may be those of prisoners. And as our readers explained to us, this is not the more "credible" bodies exhibit, Body Worlds, which opens our eyes to the competition in that small niche of body exhibitions. Charmingly, BODIES medical adviser tries to sell the exhibit as a "scared straight" option, as there are "lungs blackened by smoking and a brain damaged by a stroke." Go to this show before lunch...or maybe after... or if you want to go on a diet, perhaps.

Tickets are $24.50 for adults, $20.50 for seniors (over 60), and $18.50 for children (12 and under), which is expensive, but when are you going to see a bunch of bodies hacked up and put on display, short of getting into med school? You can buy tickets in advance here.

I hope this exhibit stays open thoughout it's stated duration, since we all have to realize we live in a country full of retarded people who preach their morals onto someone else.

i got my tickets for the friday after thanksgiving! woo.

Well, hello there, skinless cadaver genitals. So nice to see you today.

I think one can safely assume that the exhibit was made with Chinese prisioners, which were most likely legally obtained, as with most oppressive regimes the will of the goverment is the law.

or you could just go to Philadelphia's Franklin Institute, pay the same price and see 200 plastinated cadevers at BodyWorlds

Most likely Tibetan prisoners. Ugh. I can't imagine putting money into these people's coffers.

Skinless cadavers at the South Street SEAPORT! Isn't that kinda site inappropriate? How about having a Moby Dick exhibition?

On second thought, perhaps dead bodies is really what people in the Wall Street area want to see.

Could you explain what this comment means please?

---- And as our readers explained to us, this is not the more "credible" bodies exhibit, Body Worlds ----

what is more "credible" about Body Worlds? I'm an investor (not a member of the company or management, just a guy who owns their stock) in the company that produces the the Bodies show at the Seaport and I am always curious about the perceptions of our shows including comparisons to the Body Worlds shows.

Credibility is not something I've heard before. You did mention the health angle put forward as if it is a justification to mask a pure profit motive. I suggest it is more balanced than that and while this company is making money they have really accomplished a great deal to educate people about their own bodily selves and that does not require an apologia or rationalization of any kind.

Body Worlds preceded Bodies The Exhibition. Von Hagens deserves credit as the originator of this form of presentation, but credibility doesn't enter into that only recognition where it is due.

If anything can be said along those lines it would be that Body Worlds in general has been veering more towards showmanship in their presentation of the human form with alterations and adjustments to the tissue whereas Premier Exhibitions Bodies The Exhibit shows truly place a perhaps greater emphasis now on educating and informing. I don't say this to say they are thus more credible, but there is no reason to say that against their efforts to my knowledge.

It really is a wonderful exhibit. I do hope you go see it.

Wondering if this body exhibit will ever make it to canada. I live in Victoria B.C. I am interested to see the show.Maybe even go to the westeren States. Please let me know where the exhibit plans to travel. Thank you for your time. Amanda

Where did they get the fetus and isn't is kind of sad and disgusting to show the poor unborn child like that?

Where did they get the fetus and isn't is kind of sad and disgusting to show the poor unborn child like that? I mean this is a life that never was. So sad.

This looks really cool. For the person above me who said it was sad to show a fetus, well yes it is. but isn't abortion sad too? This would be like showing the mother the life she killed because she couldn't take responsibilities for her actions.

Oh like it wrong to murder polical dissidents and the n display the flayed corpses. You're a moronic little asshole

Just because you can see the exhibit, doesn't mean you should. When you consider that none of the people whose bodies are exhibited gave their consent to be displayed this way (consent was only given by a third party, the Dalian University of Plastination in China), you understand that perhaps the lessons of anatomy and health could be learned in a different and more respectful way. Also, all of the bodies are from "unclaimed" or "unidentified" deaths in China. This is worrisome, considering that in China, over 2,000 executions are performed a year and some of those are purported to be of political dissidents.

i am a student in high school and im taking anatomy and physiology this year. i just went to the exhibit today and it was amazing. i have never seen something like this im my whole life. the ammount of work and detail put into preserving and displaying every part of the human body was just mind blowing. Just forget about who the people's bodies were and how they got there because in a sense it is an honor for them to be desplayed there to benefit all of mankind. the people who run the desplay also are very strict about photography and any touching of the bodies in order to respect the bodies. and again it is a fascinating display which really teaches alot about our bodies. I learned something today and imagine the next kid who goes in and sees this amazing display, he might end up curing cancer or some fatal disease in the future.

i would like know, when will be the next exposition in Florida ( MIAMI )?
Thank you !

Where is the exhibit, how long will it be there, and where will it go for the next 6 months?

Thanks

The exhibition is in Brazil right now, I just went to it, awesome. I'm pretty sure that right now, after visiting the exhibition, many people respect their bodies way more than before, since now people can better realize how fragile their bodies are. This is a must seen experience. Everyone should go see what they are really like. Teaches us a lesson on how we are really inside.
