MVP to A-Rod

2005_11_arod.jpgNo Championship? No problem! Yankees fans can say they have the MVP on their team. Alex Rodriguez won the American League Most Valuable Player award yesterday over David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox yesterday in a vote that not only pitted a the Yankees against the Red Sox, but a position player against a full time designated hitter. Rodriguez received 331 total points to Ortiz's 307. The two players received 16 and 11 1st place votes respectively with Vladimir Guerrero picking up the final one.

So who deserved the award more? A-Rod with his all-around play in the field and on offense or Big Papi and his clutch hitting? Some fans in New York don't think he deserves it and for his part, A-Rod thinks that award or not, he needs to win several World Series rings. "We can win three World Series. With me, it's never going to be over. My benchmark is so high that no matter what I do, it's never going to be enough. But I understand that."

Three other Yankees - Gary Sheffield, Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter - finished 8-10 in the voting.

In other A-Rod news, the newly minted MVP said he won't be playing in New York's poker parlors anymore.

I say the best looking player won.

What a treat those ladies had when they saw A rod at the swimming pool.

Ortiz made a bigger difference to the Red Sox than A-Rod did to the Yankees. Without Big Papi, the Sox finish out of the wildcard for sure. So in terms of who's most valuable to his team, it shoulda been Big Papi. Take away Mariano and the Yankees aren't the same--he's their MVP. Ah well.

oh, and another thing is this: MVP voting happens before the postseason begins. the MVP is for the player who gets their team to the playoffs, not "winning championships." Thats what the Championship Series MVP and World Series MVP awards are for.

If Papi had played 50% of his games at first, he would have made a ton of errors costing the Sox runs and games, and probably would have injured himself lumbering that huge ass of his around the bag. He would not have 9 half innings to spend in the clubhouse looking at video of the opposing pitchers, practicing his swing, and keeping rested in general. He's a great clutch hitter for sure, but his numbers would not be as good if he played every day, his defense would hurt his team. He's not a complete player and therefore not the MVP. Sorry.

  • MVPs win championships? Like A-Rod, Tejada, Giambi and Ichiro? It's a popularity contest like all post-season awards.

What a terrible choice. He plays well in easy games and collapses when games really count. Not my idea of MVP. MVPs win championships.
