Bob Sheppard, the legendary voice of both the Giants and the Yankees has decided to call it quits (Times Select or summary on NY1) - just for the Giants. The 95 year-old public address announcer has been with the Giants since 1956, ever since the Giants moved to Yankee Stadium from the Polo Grounds. The reason for stepping aside? He just couldn't deal with the traffic. When we initially read that, Gothamist was thinking, "what is a 95 year-old doing behind the wheel," but it seems like a friend drives Sheppard to and from games.
Sheppard, who has been with the Yankees for 55 years, said that he still intends on being the PA announcer for them as the Yankees just offered him a two-year contract extension. For their part, the Giants executive VP John Mara still hopes to talk Sheppard out of retirement. If he can't, Sheppard's voice will be sorely missed at Giants Stadium.

Wow, going from 10-11 ( including pre-season) games and possibly up to 14 games per year for the Giants (playoffs), to continue 81 games per year with the Yankees? I know traffic sucks and so does winter, but c'mon Bob, you're only 95!
I think Mr. Tisch's sons should offer him helicopter rides to and from the games. Or better, the Donald, the so-called huge sports fan-should shuttle Mr. Shepard in Trump One (I am making that name up), his personal helicopter.
Bob Sheppard has been the voice of the Giants for too long to lose him, especially at age 95, over traffic.
i agree michael, but at 95, he probably shouldn't be spending that much time in cars. every second counts! it seems like he also wants to spend more time with his wife.
I think its a bit funny that he is tired of New Jersey traffic, but that is what you get when you have your bloody stadium in the middle of a swamp in Jersey!
