When It's Time to Change

2005_11_food_piomaya.jpgOur good friend and neighbor Augie gave us the scoop on Pio Maya, the new taqueria set to open in a few weeks in the space that was, for a short while, Von Singh's. Run by a former Otto employee and his brother, Pio Maya will be serving up traditional Mexican food and promises to serve up some fiery salsa for Augie and any others brave enough for the challenge. We're definitely looking forward to having a new taqueria in the 'hood -- lord knows New York could use some.

40-42 West 8th Street, between 5th & 6th Aves, Greenwich Village

No way could this place be good enough to make up for the loss of Von Singh's... How sad, andother generic Mexicanish place hits the central village...

Noooo! I just tried Barrio Chino in the LES two weekends ago. Holy Shit. This is the stuff. I'm from the border of Mexico & Texas and I posted on here at length once before about how there are no good Mexican restaurants in NYC and, gladly, I ate my words at Barrio Chino. My friend (who is also Mexican) and I both loved our entrees. I had the steak tacos, she had the fish and we shared some spinach sprinkled with lime juice. YUM. Also, try the jalapeño margaritas. Deelish.

Good news... the best tacos in the neighborhood are at Mercadito West at $9 to a plate of 3 miniscule bites, better value is sorely needed.

  • A valid point. That'll learn me to post before I've finished my coffee . . .

Suggestion: This post could be much better if you simply included the location of this new restaurant rather that assuming all of your readers know where Von Sings was. Especially since this is posted to "In the 'Hood" it would be nice to know what neighborhood you are talking about without having to click through to another site.
