Please Explain: Sheep on Broome Street

Please Explain: Sheep on Broome Street

You guys were great at explaining the Bertrand Russell graffiti mystery over the weekend, so now we've found another puzzler for you to unravel. We've seen a bunch of these sheep all over town these last few weeks-- but this one carries the puzzling message "stop the sheep-- fukc the shepard." Who are the sheep, and why do they need to be stopped? And who is this shepard? And why does he need to be fcuked? We are seriously confused.

    SOME CLARIFICATION:

the kid who puts up the sheep that say 'escape the mass mentality' and the 'street artist' that puts up sheep called 5003 are TWO different people. unfortunately a good idea is free to come to multiple people.

my modest, uninformed guess is that the sheep is symbolic of any general follower, (read what nick posted on nov. 10). it can seem cliche, like saying 'go against the crowd', but it really has more meaning than you might think. it's really easy to fall into the pattern of a 'sheep'; that is, to recite someone else's words instead of really thinking about what you're doing. this can apply to every organization or group or trend or whatever. just look at all the problems that arise in this country from blind political party support. as soon as a democrat agrees with fellow democrats principally because they are democrats like him, he's following that crowded flock, or in other words a mass mentality. the mass mentality can take us very ugly places, from violent riots to buying endless amounts of shit because the TV commercial tells us to. if you aspirez to escape that, if you listen and analyze what it is you're yelling and doing, you can do things that are free from someone else's ulterior motives, something more ..true to yourself. damn, another cliche.

as to fuck the shepherd, it's just a way of telling the sheep to stop following the leaders in such a mindless fashion. apply this to bush if you want, whatever, it's also a general statement.

sorry for writing so much, i just think i might understand what he (she?) is trying to say... escape the mass mentality, yo.

I happen to be the shepherd, but am perplexed by the unexpected hostility of the graffito. I come from a long line of shepherds, but to my knowledge this piece of graffito is misrepresenting us.

Ray Kelly should assign at least 3 cops on this mofo's case to apprehend this dangerous menace to our society. He deserves a serious pistol whipping for defacing private properties with his "art"

maybe it means: you’re the Evil Man, and I’m the Righteous Man, and Mr. 9mm here—he’s the Shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could mean: you’re the Righteous Man, and I’m the Shepherd; and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. Now, I’d like that, but that shit ain’t the truth. The truth is: you’re the Weak and I’m the Tyranny of Evil Men. But I’m trying, Ringo—I’m trying real hard to be the Shepherd.

SHEPHERD. The graffiti spelled it correctly, can't all of you? SHEPHERD.

Not to sound mean or go off base here, but I find it inane when someone posts a comment, pushing a political agenda (let's just say cloning) onto the topic at hand and marks it as the truth. I have no problem with comments that are suggestions to what something might be, but pushing an agenda is just wrong.

Having seen some of 5003's other tags and stickers he has put up as well as speaking to some other "artists" i'm going to go with.. it doesn't have a thing to do with cloning.

The more I read what I wrote over, the more I feel I'm being a douchebag... but he started it.. hah

Once upon a time there would have been a discussion of Christian symbolism (Jesus as the good shepard and what not). What has human secularism wrought?

This is a refence to Dolly, the cloned sheep, and the scientists who conduct genetic research (the shepherds).

It is an anti-GE message, and is trying to re-enforce the idea that GE is cruel by referring to Dolly, who unfortunately died very young.

  • more detail: comments on-topic to the post-- simply saying "this sucks" doesn't add anything to the conversation. if you want to express an opinion about the site or where we're taking it, that belongs in an email to the editor (or on your own site)-- not in an off-topic comment.

but to be sure-- we always check out the comment list tied to an IP before we ban it and delete all the comments tied to it from the system. one or two trolling comments generally doesn't rate a reaction-- but the IPs we deleted today were tied to a couple of dozen flaming/trolling comments. the comment policy is quite clear on the terms of service here-- and that's not allowed.

hey guys-- there were some troll-y comments on this post, and i deleted those IPs from our comment system. our comment policy is linked above.

  • The image made me think of my early school days as I responded with, "4 legs good, 2 legs bad!". Good ol George Orwell...

The sheep tag is by a street artist known as 5003. You can see a lot of his work around noho/soho/chinatown

One of his scrawls is escape the mass mentality, so I would assume this one has to do with people, such as yourselves, being followers... Hence the sheep graphic. Hopefully I was of some help.

    Cheers!

Well that sheep, the spray painted one. Is by an NYU student. The other ones...no idea.

  • modified

clearly, the 'shepard' represents Bush. The sheep, well that's obvious.

So confused. How did a post about wall sheep turn into weird french connection thing? Gothamist can post a large picture of the word fuck, but won't type the word fuck? Is this to protect the children? Because, you know, I hear that they are the future.

But seriously. Don't be a such a jerk off. If you want to write fuck, write fuck. Not fcuk or fukc or ufck. Fuck. Don't make me feel more dyslexic than I already am.

  • ann

maybe the shepard is anna wintour and the sheep are the trendroid fashionistas
