Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield Pick Up Awards

2005_11_gglove.jpgThe New York Post is reporting that Derek Jeter will win the Gold Glove today. The Gold Glove, presented to the best fielder at each position, will be Jeter's 2nd in a row. Jeter's .979 fielding percentage was good for 2nd best for eligible players in the American League.

On the offensive side for the Yankees, Alex Rodriguez and Gary Sheffield both won Silver Slugger awards at their positions. The Silver Slugger, voted on by coaches and managers, is awarded to the players who they think were the "best offensive producers" at their positions. The award is Rodriguez's 8th and first at 3rd base and Sheffield's 4th and second with the Yankees.

With baseball's post-season over, we're about to enter awards season in earnest. Members of the Yankees figure to contend for a few awards - Rookie of the Year (Nov. 7th), the Cy Young (Nov. 8th), Manager of the Year (Nov. 9th) and MVP (Nov. 14th). The competition for Robinson Cano in the Rookie of the Year award is tight, and in all likelihood, Mariano Rivera won't win the Cy Young, Joe Torre won't win Manager of the Year, and A-Rod...well, it remains to be seen if he will win the AL MVP or not. A position player vs a DH in Boston's David Ortiz. The all around game of Rodriguez vs Ortiz's clutch hitting.
