Winning for "The Duke"

2005_10_sgiants.jpgThe Giants played their first game ever without Wellington Mara as a member of the team and provided a reminder of the ingredients that made them great through the years, a suffocating defense and a punishing running game that led to a 36-0 victory over the Washington Redskins.

You could tell from the start that the Giants were playing with a lot of emotion. Tiki Barber took the opening handoff 57 yards to setup a Giants field goal. He added a 59-yard run on his way to a career-best 206 yards rushing. Barber also scored a touchdown and presented the ball to one of Mr. Mara’s grandsons while the team presented the game ball to John Mara. Eli Manning had 146 yards passing with Amani Toomer accounting for 43 of them. The Giants defense held Washington to only 165 yards and sacked Mark Brunell five times and forced four turnovers.

The win coupled with a loss by the Eagles, gives the Giants sole possession of first place in the NFC East. They travel to California to face an old nemesis, the 49rs, next weekend.

so crazy. who would have thought that the giants would be in first place at all this season. certainly not me.

#1 Mara had a positive impact on the sport and the league and should be well remembered for that.
#2 Mara should also be remembered as a traitor to NY for moving the team to jersey.
#3 The NJ Giants should be forced to change their name.
