Um, I just need to stick up for Counter here. I freaking love that place. I usually don't seek out vegan food, but they really get creative with the dishes and the mix of flavors. They have a rooftop garden space where they grow fresh herbs and veggies... Wine bar is the main reason I go, though. They have a great selection of organic and biodynamic wines and great flights of 3 half-glasses for $12. It's one of the best wine bar deals I've found in the city, makes Bar Veloce's pours look really stingy. I think just sitting at the bar and ordering drinks and appetizers is best way to experience this place overall. I usually don't go for sit-down dinner... Meanwhile, I just tried Nicky's sandwich today and thought that was a great deal, but I still need to try these other banh mi places to compare...

Smelled last night at the intersection of Van Brunt and Hamilton (Red Hook) circa 10pm. If I had to go with a brand choice, it would be Log Cabin's Country Kitchen variety ~ for the slight butteriness, at least in my neighborhood. Very relieved to check this one off the "Self: Signs You're Crazy" list.

I ate at Yama on Houston once - never again. We found a roach in the soy sauce bottle AFTER we had finished our meal. Yech.

Counter is ok, but it's not good. I really tried to like the food there, but it's merely average. And average isn't good enough when there are so many delicious choices out there.

I eat at AQ Cafe a couple of times a month. The food is definitely high quality and priced right, but don't go if you're on the clock -- at peak times, you often have to wait 30 minutes on line to place your order.

Annie! what in tarnation are you talking about? The Lillie's BBQ is just...terrible! Yeah! Everyone should stay away. the food is rotten and the backyard smells like poo poo. No one should ever make the trek there. Please stay away. Remember way back when the BBQ was free? What about Catty Shack or Canal Bar weekend BBQ's?

Lillie's is fabulous. Sundays serve up tasty, tasty, tasty food and good music in their backyard garden. BBQ master Rich cannot be beat. It takes me about an hour and a half for me to get there from my Manhattan neighborhood but it's well worth the trek.

AQ Cafe, on the ground floor of Scandinavia House, is a branch of the more famous Aquavit. It's an easy place to get your simple, but good-tasting Swedish food (Swedish meatball sandwiches) if you don't want to venture out to IKEA in Jersey or the more 'experimental' Scandinavian restaurants in the city.

Cafe Atlas (Second Ave and 4th Street) for best dessert in town. And, yes, most of those desserts also happen to be vegan.
