Essential Food

2005_10_food_tonycover.jpgTime Out New York came out with their Essential New York issue yesterday, which included various and sundry food picks. Now we can't personally vouch for some of them, since we haven't hit them up yet, so if you have an opinon, let us know:
* Late night chicken: Big Arc chicken, 233 First Ave between 13th & 14th Sts.
* Vegetarian restaurant: Counter, 108 First Ave between 6th & 7th Sts.
* Overlooked midtown lunch spot: AQ Cafe, 58 Park between 37th & 38th
* Sunday barbecue (which, unfortunately, wraps up on Halloween), Lillie's, 46 Beard St. at Dwight Street, Red Hook

We do, however, have some opinions on these:
* Gelato: Cones, 272 Bleecker between Morton and Jones Sts.: Cones can't stand up to Otto or Il Laboratorio, in our opinion.
* Inexpensive but trustworthy sushi: Yama (various locations): We'll take this one, but there are more inexpensive and trustworthy places out there, like Esahi in the East Village.
* Bar in which to host a birthday party: the Magician: Yes, despite not being a hipster, we had our birthday there, and although some might disagree, they were in attendance at said birthday party.
* Olive emporium: Sahadi's, 187 Atlantic Ave. between Court and Clinton Sts.: Yes, we adore it.
* Sandwich: Nicky's Vietnamese, 150 E. 2nd St. between Aves A & B: Better and cheaper banh mi are to be had at Banh Mi So. 1 and Saigon Bahn Mi.
* Spice collection: Kalustyans, 123 Lexington Ave at 28th St.: Definitely -- you can smell it as you walk by on the sidewalk.

What are some of your essentials?

Cafe Atlas (Second Ave and 4th Street) for best dessert in town. And, yes, most of those desserts also happen to be vegan.

AQ Cafe, on the ground floor of Scandinavia House, is a branch of the more famous Aquavit. It's an easy place to get your simple, but good-tasting Swedish food (Swedish meatball sandwiches) if you don't want to venture out to IKEA in Jersey or the more 'experimental' Scandinavian restaurants in the city.

Lillie's is fabulous. Sundays serve up tasty, tasty, tasty food and good music in their backyard garden. BBQ master Rich cannot be beat.

It takes me about an hour and a half for me to get there from my Manhattan neighborhood but it's well worth the trek.

best hangover / i'm really tired cure: carl's cheesesteaks (with cheese whiz, and none of the fancier cheeses).

Annie! what in tarnation are you talking about?

The Lillie's BBQ is just...terrible! Yeah! Everyone should stay away. the food is rotten and the backyard smells like poo poo. No one should ever make the trek there. Please stay away.

Remember way back when the BBQ was free?

What about Catty Shack or Canal Bar weekend BBQ's?

um. J. maybe you were tripping on something and accidentally pooed your pants when you were in lillie's backyard, and that was the offensive odor you speak of? because that's just crazy talk.

i once had a very minty martini at counter. it tasted like mouthwash, so i sent it back.

word on the banh mi. nicky's is no match for Banh Mi So. 1.

Counter is just so-so. I'd take Angelica Kitchen or Kate's Joint any day.

I eat at AQ Cafe a couple of times a month. The food is definitely high quality and priced right, but don't go if you're on the clock -- at peak times, you often have to wait 30 minutes on line to place your order.

Counter is ok, but it's not good. I really tried to like the food there, but it's merely average. And average isn't good enough when there are so many delicious choices out there.

I ate at Yama on Houston once - never again. We found a roach in the soy sauce bottle AFTER we had finished our meal. Yech.

Smelled last night at the intersection of Van Brunt and Hamilton (Red Hook) circa 10pm.

If I had to go with a brand choice, it would be Log Cabin's Country Kitchen variety ~ for the slight butteriness, at least in my neighborhood.

Very relieved to check this one off the "Self: Signs You're Crazy" list.

Um, I just need to stick up for Counter here. I freaking love that place. I usually don't seek out vegan food, but they really get creative with the dishes and the mix of flavors. They have a rooftop garden space where they grow fresh herbs and veggies...

Wine bar is the main reason I go, though. They have a great selection of organic and biodynamic wines and great flights of 3 half-glasses for $12. It's one of the best wine bar deals I've found in the city, makes Bar Veloce's pours look really stingy. I think just sitting at the bar and ordering drinks and appetizers is best way to experience this place overall. I usually don't go for sit-down dinner...

Meanwhile, I just tried Nicky's sandwich today and thought that was a great deal, but I still need to try these other banh mi places to compare...

You guys are the 22615 best, thanks so much for the help.
