Police Gun Down Teenaged iPod Robber

Responding to an iPod mugging on Flatbush and St. Mark's Avenues, the police ended up pursuing 16 year old Javaughn Higgins. They ended up firing 22 shots at him, hitting Higgins twice (in the cheek and left leg). Police thought Higgins was armed, as the mugging victim said Higgins, along with three other suspects that had been following him, flashed a gun, but it turned out that Higgins had a pellet gun that just looked like a 9mm. However, the story got stranger when it turned out that Higgins was actually out on bail for the death of a Bengali immigrant in Borough Park - Mofizur Rahaman died from injuries after being beaten for his cellphone. The police recovered the iPod from Higgins, but the other three suspects were still at large. [Related: Gothamist on iPod robberies in the city]

The police confirmed that a man killed during a shootout outside a Brooklyn social club last weekend was in fact hit by a police bullet. It's a very confusing story, so we urge you to read the article to try to make sense of it.

ok, crime aside, how do the police manage to get off 20+ shots? i always imagined they shoot, i don't know...3-4 shots like they do on tv, but is their aim really that bad? not that i'm any better, but a 10% 'hit' rate? is that considered good?

One more robber off the streets. Yay!

22 ehh? Maybe a little target practice class maybe in order (bullets cost tax payers money, you know)… other than that – I less ipod stealer threatening us. I’m pleased overall.

When you are afraid, you'll empty your weapon as quickly as possible.

Of course, this whole story indicates why you should be carrying a glock and not an ipod.

The police were lucky this time, but crime is out of control, especially for those of us who can't afford to live in Manhattan. The crime statistics are BS.

It doesn't matter that its illegal to carry if you aren't a wealthy democrat in this city. Do it anyway. Its better to risk 6 months in jail than lose your life.

this iPod robber was out on bail (he had already beaten an immigrant - where is ACLU???)

When your life is in danger it is not the time to count bullets (yeah, 10 cents per bullet is a cost for taxpayers).

so sad guys. so sad. 22 bullets and this thug is still alive... wtf.

he's off the streets but only temporarily it seems. crime lives on.

user-pic

Isn't that intersection like a block from a huge precinct house? Dumb kid deserves to be shot for trying to rob someone a stone's throw from building full of cops.

user-pic

Maybe it's their glocks? I bet if they still had their 6 shot wheelguns, the hit rate would of been better. With all the crap they done to the trigger of the glocks, it's a wonder they could hit paper.
At least they got home safely and the dog was not hurt.
and, next time live in a better area you ipodders, how bout instead of spending money on an ipod, spend it on a better place to live??????

how about the iGlock? with replay capability to review your MDK?

this is a fucking property crime for chrissake. such materialistic society that this young lad so desires these electronic gadgets and we shoot him for acting on his desire. very gross.

user-pic

stupid:

The 'lad' threatened someone with a deadly weapon (pellet gun or not, the point is whether the threat is credible, not whether it was actually real). I'd think property crime would be more like snatching the iPod when its owner wasn't looking.

user-pic

actually there's more to the news...
"Police also found bodies of six squirrels, four homeless, five immigrants, two strayed cats, and one lame dog close to the crime scene, all with bullets to fatal organs."

I would say their hit rate is more than 10%

user-pic

I agree… It’s credible enough. My only wish is that more should have been lodged in him. Temporarily? Maybe there should be some sort of class from those are trained to aim for the neck… Materialistic? I think not. I don’t expect that thug to understand the basic of social contract.

Oh please, acting on his desires? Get a grip. They are rules, and punishment for violating those rules; you break the former, you pay with the latter.
