News Flash: Blogs Can Be a Time Suck!

2005_10_blogs.jpgAd Age decides to freak out managers everywhere with an article that leads with "U.S. workers in 2005 will waste the equivalent of 551,000 years reading blogs." Oh, boo-hoo: That's spread across 35 million workers, which means 3.5 hours a WEEK is spent reading blogs. Big deal: Blogging is the new talking on the phone or standing at the water cooler. While there are various statistics that claim that only 25% of blog reading directly relates to work, we always thought that being an interesting person who could find ways to handle a drudgery of a job was acceptable. Why can't the American worker take advantage on the increased productivity that a Microsoft Office suite gives us by reading some blogs? We're not talking writing Jack-Sawyer Lost fan-fic, for crying out loud. Old media is so mean - they refuse to consider blogs sources of news!

How much time do you think you spend reading blogs at work? Do your bosses care? We've heard of some enlightened managers who say, "Read those blogs - find out what those crazy people are thinking." Although some managers think blogs are what you say when you cough up some phlegm.

Too many bosses adhere to the old paradigm that every nanosecond you're physically in the office should be spent at work, and when you're away from work, you should be thinking about work.

Read a blog, such as

and blog yourself. You need a minute or two away now and then.

I work part time for a newspaper. If I'm late for some reason the owner squawks -- even though, due to logistical stuff I won't get into here, the work may not be ready for me until 10-15 mins after I arrive. I adhere to a looser paradigm: get in a little late if necessary, as long as the work is done.

We work way too hard in the USA. In Europe, there's a lot more time off, with benefits. Viva la France.

it's not up to you choose your own "paradigm"... and the fact that the work might not be ready to be delivered into your precious hands until – gasp – 10 minutes after you saunter in and grace the office with your presence is irrelevant.

when you own the company, you can adopt whatever philosophy you want. until then, you play by the rules of the person who signs your check.

maybe there's a reason behind the bosses motivations that you're not aware of. maybe they have a little experience with this stuff and they know that many people – given the opportunity – will slack off and that it's far easier to have a "one size fits all" rule even if it does "punish" (in quotes because you ARE at a job, remember?) those who are more diligent.

Joe, a bit touchy on the subject, perhaps? Study after study shows that breaks througout the day increase worker productivity and office morale, and a lot of comapanies now offer break rooms, massages, even nap areas. If they're okay with it, maybe you should give it a try too.

Or is it that you're a manager, and you're not happy with the way your employees behave? Maybe the problem is you, not them...

JOE, THIS IS YOUR BOSS. GET BACK TO WORK JOE. I'M WATCHING YOU.
