Foraging in DUMBO

2005_10_food_veggies.jpgGothamist adores shopping for produce and foodstuffs at markets that care as much about the freshness, beauty and seasonality of food as we do. That's why we regularly seek out the best of the best at local butchers, fishmongers, produce stores and greenmarkets. And, we feel for our NYC brethren that live in nabes where these riches aren't found easily.

That said, we were excited for DUMBO-ites (is that the term?), when we heard about a health/organic grocery spot called Bridge Fresh opening up between the bridges. Our hopes were quickly dashed when the Korean bodega opened its doors. Great signage. Not much behind it.

Now, however, our hopes are being raised again - Word is that a new, upscale, farmer's market-oriented grocery called Foragers will be opening its gleaming glass doors in November. It's tagline is certainly inspiring: Seasonal, Regional, Farmers, Organic.

Could the signage be true sign of what's yet to come? Or will our DUMBO desires be dashed?

But what about you? What are the favorite little grocery gems in your 'hood? (We hope the best ain't Gristede's!)

  • yes foragers is maybe good so we have some fresh stuff. but why the hell are the prices so high? thank god abc is moving out and hopefully this stupid influx of mediocre bullshit will not be able to survive. i have been here since '85 when this was truly a place for real artists and now all mediocrity is trying to creep in. TRYING.live here in you like to but come with respect and NOT greed.

It's finally open and it's far from a korean deli... it's fine food... yum!

As a fellow Ft. Greener, I couldn't agree more. With the end of the season for the Ft. Greene Park Saturday farmer's market coming to a close, it's pretty much Fresh Direct until spring. Well, that and L'Epicerie on Vanderbilt near Dekalb for specialty items.

  • Peas and Pickles is currently the ONLY place in Dumbo where you can buy food. It's a great deli, but it's no grocery store. It's about time someone opened a grocery store to supply all those people paying for over-priced condos with their pine nuts, dried cherries, and arugula.

Now, will someone please bring a decent market to Fort Greene?? I hate having to walk all the way to Atlantic Center just to buy groceries. And Bravo just doesn't cut it.

More crap in DUMBO. It's actually amazing how long that neighborhood managed to hold out and be decent.

I don't hate the people for moving there or anything :) It's just a shadow of it's former self. Hopefully the rumored housing bubble will stave off the reamining development. Doubtful.
