I like both Rachael Ray and Giada De Laurentiis for different reasons. I think that it's a waste of time hating on either one of them. They are both doing what they love to do, and that's cooking. Yes, Rachael Ray can be a little much at times, but she must be doing something right to have the amount of fans that she does, and to have so many people in her corner. I just recently watched her E! True Hollywood Story, and she acknowledges the fact that she IS NOT a chef, and that she can't dispute anything that a real chef has to say. She also said that people who hate her are perfectly entitled to do so because everyone has their own opinion, and that she would be stupid to think that she can please everyone.

As far as Giada is concerned, she is one of my all time favorites. Watching her cook, makes me want to learn how to cook. Yes, it is annoying when her Italian accent comes out of nowhere when pronouncing certain things, and yes, most of the time her outfits are too revealing, but what are you gonna do? Like I said, she must be doing something right to be making the amount of money that she is, and to have the amount of fans that she does. Why hate?

In the end, you can either watch them or not. Believe me, those two are still going to be doing what they love to do despite what people think of them. You can't please everyone.

Alton Brown is the ABSOLUTE best though.

She tells you to wash and prep everything when you bring the stuff home frome the store.....doesn't that time count???? EVOO, the "giggle" and the garbage bowl, not to mention the way she stacks the contents of her fridge on her arm are all annoying to me. And NOW she's effing everywhere!! Giada rules.....sorry Rach!!

shes alright but i prefer giada over rachel anyday. giada is very sexy and sophisticated. she has a pair of plump titties and her mouth looks like it could hold a big ol dick! i love the orgasmic moans and expressions when she tastes the food. rr is annoying, loud and obnoxious(and her voice). she makes up stupid words like stoup, yummo, delish, and evoo. why cant she talk like a normal person and say stew or yummy delicious or even just say olive oil. why in the hell does she pile up every dish, pan and her food? then she struggle to move it to the counter. thats what bugs me. shes also cheap, she doesnt tip worth the damn. a tip is supposed to be 15% not the left over pennies.

Wow, I had no idea that you were such a good judge of character. Of course a 30 minute show can definately allow you to see when someone is completely void of personality.
Who cares if you dont like Rachel Ray, everyone else does, and that makes you wierd.
Dont watch her show if you dont want, im pretty sure forzen dinners only require a microwave(which you should know how to use)
But lets not pretend that your life is so much better than hers.

RR rules. Giada sucks big time. I am so tired of people saying she is better. She is uglier and in my opinion, more annoying. At least RR shows who she really is on TV. Giada is so fake. You can just tell. Everytime she beams that sharktooth smile of hers, you know she is not genuinely that nice. Her smile is fake. Everything about her personality sucks. She is devoid of personality.

RR might be a little too much at times but I rather that than the other pygmy hobbit.

I tried to force myself to watch rachel ray's show a few days ago. I lasted 30 or so seconds. She is so annoying! Her cutsie, please love me demeaner is such a turn off. I wouldn't shed any tears if she choked on the next 30 minute meal she prepared. I'll take Giada all day long. She's elegant, classy, beautiful, and smart. She is genuine in every aspect. Giada is a real woman, soft, sweet, intelligent and sensitive and feminine. Women, embrace your femine qualities and stop trying to be men. Follow giada's lead!

First of all, it's the "dumbing" down of America, kind of ironic that it's spelled wrong, don't you think? Also, Rachael Ray is hands down the worst cook ever to have a tv show regarding cooking. Fattening, cheap, from a can/box/mix trailer park cuisine. Seriously, anyone can produce a tasty healthy meal from fresh organic ingredients in 30 minutes or less. Don't resort to cheap trickery and sub-par food by-products. Pick up any of Anthony Bourdain's books, or Jamie Oliver, Or ALton Brown, The Joy of Cooking even for God's Sake, anything but that fat assed obnoxious fake loudmouth.

It's frightening that some of you would rather watch a dead chef (Jeff Smith) who's TV show went down in flames due to 7 (yes count em') allegations of sexual abuse, than watch a person who's "too happy". What a twisted world we live in. Get some perspective.

Yikes. This goes to show what a nightmare the internet is generating. All of the world's crazy people, of which there are apparently many, now have an outlet to vent their venom on people they don't know from a hole in the wall.

Why any sane person would poison their mind (and soul, if you are so inclined) by "hating" a woman that appears on television is a complete mystery. If you are going to hate something, hate evil, hate injustice, hate ignorance, hate tyranny... there are a lot of things dislike. Only a complete retard lives their life hating a person they see on television.

Is Rachael Ray above criticism? Since she is a human being, probably not, but the larger question is whether people have their personal priorities straight by spending a lot of time criticizing her. That's not even to mention the "hate" thing. That's scary.

Ethical_chef, I think you're being a little harsh. For example, if a mother of three doesn't have time to cook and gets fast food once in a while, or if she can't afford to eat food that "executive chefs" make, would you still blast her for being ignorant of culture, or for hating her kitchen? I understand that Ray is NOT the best of cooks, but for some people she is an at least decent cook. I, for one, would love to go out and eat at the best restaurants and learn about fine cuisuine, but that is just not finacially possible for me (I am a student.) Also, I like Ray, and many other cooks on FoodTV. Occasionally I even eat fast food. Well then, according to you, I guess that makes me a ignorant fool.

As an actual Executive Chef, I must admit that Rachel Ray is an idiot at best. She is the Oprah book club or the Applebees of chefs. Those of you that adore her know absolutely nothing about the importance of food and beverage on culture for the last thousand years. For those of you who hate your kitchens so much or are too afraid of them to actually cook in them, take the time to watch "Supersize Me", in essence that is exactly what RR is giving you. Good luck folks and enjoy that cardboard soaked in EVOO,,,YUMMO!!!!!!!!

Personally, I like Rachel Ray. Although she is really peppy, I don't really have a problem with it. What I don't understand is why you can't like both Rachel Ray and any "real chef" on FoodTV. You can like McDonald's and sushi, both (not to say they're equal, but you can still enjoy both.) Sometimes, when I'm in a hurry, I do what Ray and Sandra Lee (from Semi-Homemade) do: make a quick easy meal using pre-packaged and cheaper ingredients. On other days, I like to actually take the time out to make a "better" meal. It just depends on how much time I have. Anyone who bashes Rachel Ray simply because she does not cook "fancy" or "professionally" is being a snob in my opinion. She is simply appealing to people who don't have the experience (or money) to prepare meals like an expert. I view Ray as a stepping stone into cooking; you have to start somewhere.

Rachel is not a chef she is at best a "cook" but then again so was Hannibal Lechter. Rachel is a lifestyle specialist who has the backing of Oprah "I'm not Gay" Winfrey, and you think the Food Network is going to tell Oprah take a walk, because Rachel can at times be annoying like your drunk buddy at the bar during ladies night. Would prefer tosee someone like Gaida, Sarah or even Graham Kerr true chefs, or even repeats of the late Julia Childs or even the late Jeff Smith .
Because when they cooked even they made mistakes and showed you how even a true chef can screw up, and that well things happen. By the way Rachel & the other Food network shows all of them have staffs that buy and prep the food before the production of the show. Personally would love to see some of the outtakes from rachel just to hear her once say Ah Shit this stuff really tastes like Crap instead of the diabetic coma inducing YUMMO.

I suspect there is a pretty clear split in FoodNetwork by chef. I think it goes like this:

Side One (which I sadly think is the losing side):
Mario
Alton
Wolfgang (oh how i miss that jolly Austrian)
Jamie

Side Two:
Emeril
Rachel
Giada (and her GIANT head)
Bobby

Some folks that fall in the middle:
Paula
(who doesn't love that much butter... on the other hand can you really shape & decorate cream cheese and call it a recipe? Isn't that against some rule?)
Sarah
(how many things can you do in an hour? phone calls,
guests, demonstrations, oh my!)

I'd be interested to see if this breakdown holds true for folks.

Someone's gonna tell me to chill out, but I have to say something after that last comment. Regardless of what you think of her show, Rachel Ray happens to be a terrific person. My opinion is based solely on the fact that she visited my 4-year-old cousin in the hospital through the Make-A-Wish Foundation before he died of a brain tumor. She was his favorite TV star and he was thrilled. Good enough for me.

As long as we're jumping on the pile, I'll throw in my two cents. Rachel Ray is a complete fucking ASSHOLE.

Anyone with that amount of power to chane things should use their position to affect positive change and not just their personal bank accounts at the expense of the general public's ode to all things that have intergrity and quality.

Having said said that, I can also understand why everyone may hate that Semi Homemade lady...sure her show sucks and he's most likely a psycho. But everytime I watch her, all I see is her dressed in a Nurses outfit with her huge juggs staring me in the face.

For that alone, I keep watching.

I think you're confusing Rachel Ray with Adolf Hitler. No human could be so deserving of this kind of hate and scorn other than Mr. H. There are some seriously sick people out there. So she has a cooking show and you don't like her voice. Change channels and talk it out with your therapists. The depth of your loating is scary. You would think she had done something really nastly like started a war over faulty intelligence or illegally wiretap phones instead of making too many burgers

I never cared much for RR's 30 minute meal shows since I'm not really into cooking. But in her defense, I really liked the $40 a day show and the tasty treats one for schooling me on the good restaurants and cuisine available around the country and the world.

She's got an obnoxious laugh and seems full of herself, but she is very much the cutie and I wouldn't kick her out of bed if she were single:)

RACHAEL RAY COULDN'T COOK HER WAY OUT OF A PAPER BAG. EVER RECEIPT SHE USES CAN BE FOUND IN ANY OLD "BETTY CROCKER" COOKBOOK HANDED DOWN FOR YOUR GRANDMOTHER. THERE IS ONE DIFFERENCE, SHE KILLS THE FLAVOR WITH 'EVOO'. AMOUNT EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OLIVE OIL AND HER WAY TO BUBBLY PERSONALITY ARE BOTH THINGS SHE USES TO MASK THE BAD TASTE HER AND HER COOKING WOULD LEAVE IN YOUR MOUTH IF YOU GOT A TASTE OF THE REAL THING.

You know, I used to really enjoy Rachael. Yeah she wasnt a chef, but she never claimed to be. She seemed like a nice, down to earth person with some practical ideas.

In fact right now is an older show of 30 minute meals where she didnt giggle non stop. she had darker hair, didnt grin like a manic freak and also talked like an adult and actually gave some good tips.

Now when I attempted to watch her horrible "tasty travels', I didnt think it was the same person. She constantly smiles like a manic weirdo, giggling, waves her arms non-stop, and has her "sweetie" in scenes so we are treated to her feeding him! She also yells out like a classless moron when she is done seeing an opera in a NYC restaurant.

What happened to her? She used to be tolerable and I liked her! Now it looks like her fame has given her a swollen head.

On her Holiday in 60 minutes she is insane! She is giggling, flinging her arms around so much she has nutmeg flying out of an open jar she is holding. Her voice is also about 100 decibles louder than when she used to do her shows a couple of years ago.

Sorry Rachael lovers, I used to be one of you, but now she is ridiculous. It's not that I am a food snob, she at times had some good practical advice, but now her need to overdo what she thinks is "cute" and show off her husband, and just act plain insane has turned me off.

When I saw a wedding video of her and she skipped down the aisle of a classy castle in Italy, and then giggled like a manic during the ceremony, I knew I had had enough of her.

Why must she yell now? She was on the Today show yelling yesterday and hyper as a kid who needs ritalin.

Dont tell me this is her personality. I am seeing an old show now of her's that I used to enjoy and she is not a freak that is now.

I gotta say, anyone who says anything fanatical about anything RR has got to be getting paid for it. I wouldn't be surprised if there were commentary planted by PR hacks ranting about loving RR. Like her? OK I'll buy that. Luv RR? No way. That's gotta be an intern at FoodTV. If you LOVE RR, I'd like a convincing post of why you feel so strongly about her...and a list of what meds you're taking.

I suspect there is some kind of cultural debate revolving around RR. After looking at so many forums, I am fascinated by the cultural polarisation that RR evokes. Somehow it mirrors the "Would you drink a beer with X or Y candidate?" questions asked by presidential polls, as if we know anything about that person's life.

Since RR is an empty icon, we bring our own prejudices hopes and peeves to the table. She is a Rorschach test of cooking it seems.

i think people who have a problem with her dislike other vapid shallow media personalities already barnacled in other aspects of news, sports, and movies. there's lots of news reporters who don't report news, actors who can't act, singers who can't sing etc..

It's not really about hating RR, but what she represents, which is hype for hype's sake. It mirrors all the political and cultural nonsense we've experienced in the last 5 years, and I'd say we've all suffered dearly for it. It's not the money or the fame that they dislike, it's the blatant sell she's always doing. it may not be apparant to the RR lovers, because IMHO they don't know how they're being manipulated.

I'd imagine that RR "lovers" like hearty foods with little prep time and wrinkle thir noses at sushi and "fancy" foods, might be uncomfortable taking their kids out for a formal dining experience. No value judgment here. To paraphrase Popeye, It is what it is.

I'd also imagine that RR "haters" can match wines with dishes, and can appreciate their food in a way that emboldens their perception of themselves as individuals of discriminating taste, without commercialized trivialities and isms like Yum-o!

RR is being pushed too fast because everyone puts money into something that makes money, in RR's case with a shovel.
She's so commercialized it seems as if she's just riding on a wave of cash deals. RR wasn't always this way. Something's made her change. I think it's the burden of making big money, and maintaining a standard of living she is unaccustomed to.

For the record, I think she's a diner cook trying to extend a limited repetoire, and this controversy is more interesting than her shows, which seem manic and trivial by comparison.

RR? She is annoying. She possesses the demeanor of a crystal meth addict. She never washes her food off before using it. She's so annoying and mundane that I am sure she sold her soul to the devil to get where she is, at this point. I predict that RR will be Oprah's Waterloo.

Did anyone happen to read the Harper's Monthly article about the Food Network? They were kind of reaching with the porn analogy but it was pretty funny. But it said that Sarah Molton is being pulled! How sad. Her food always looked better tasting than RR. Personally, I was always a fan of the Frugal Gourmet... although it was only after he died that I found out about his child-molestation scandal. Wonder what kind of scandals are in cutesy Rachel Ray's closet. I always thought she was kind of sinister.

I find her cutesy names, her acronyms and her giggley overexuberance irritable, but middle America loves her. They also love hot dogs and burgers, which is why they're generally, ahem, plump. This is not a woman who is trying to change the way America eats or create haute cuisine out of standard supermarket ingredients - she's just trying to make a success of herself and make her $ while the masses adore her. She's not the smartest businesswoman in the culinary world, by far, but she is making millions. She's not necessarily my cup of tea, but hey, she's made a success of herself by knowing her market. Those of us who are food snobs won't be buying her books, but nor should we spend our time berating her for marketing to someone other than us. Most of her recipes bore me, but I've tried a few that were actually quite good if unexciting and pedestrian. I prefer "Saveur", but there's a lot of America that will spend good $ on "Good Housekeeping". Let's let her be.

I'm not sure Ray's cooking would constitute "how America eats." Not unless America likes every dish to reek of "EVOO." Besides, anybody can slap together a bunch of ingredients into some pot-luck dish. I do it every day of the week. Anyone who thinks she's the only one who teaches everyday cooking techniques on Food Network hasn't been watching "Good Eats." AB has really made me want to want to pan-fry chicken, churn ice cream and most recently make waffles, since he shows just how easy it is to make excellent versions of each without any exotic ingredients or expensive gadgets whatsoever. One example of why AB has it all over Ray: AB would be the first to tell you that olive oil (forget about extra virgin) isn't appropriate for every oiling purpose under the sun. Sometimes it's better to use canola, corn, peanut or even nonstick sprays.

Just because princess and esster focused on Ray's sickeningly grating voice and phony enthusiasm for what are (at best) lesser bastardizations of genuine cuisine, it doesn't take away from the fact that yes folks: Rachael Ray is a self-absorbed, overrated and overly-exposed hack who shouldn't be on TV fooling the desperate housewives and lonely pervs out there that she's teaching people how to cook.

Emeril, you're on that team too, although I doubt you could ever "BAM!" your way into an FHM spread (ew, mental picture). You know what Bobby Flay? Get on that bench with those two bamas as well.

I'm glad luv_Ray is aware of the more substantial criticisms people have lodged (that word's being used in the proper context luv, feel free to look it up) against Rachael, and here's the kicker... THEY'RE RIGHT.

But while the focus is still temporarily on more asinine criticisms of Ray.... Girl, whoever told you that stuffing Nutella into your gaping maw while you're in your bra and panties would look cute lied through her butt-kissing teeth.

If you really want to learn to cook, check out Paula Deen or any other host who actually has a background as a chef... not someone who worked at a Macy's candy counter and counted it as "taking her lumps."

So while luv_Ray and other Ray-ites are enjoying their cultish (and by all accounts creepy) devotion to the media nuisance that is Rachael Ray, I'll be cooking some real food, drinking some real wine, and hanging out with grown adults that aren't still stuffing FHM spreads under their mattress and living with their moms.

Team Obnoxious: 1
luv_Ray: 0 (and welcome to the list, you might just win come Friday)

ppp,

no, i thought my comment on how sad it's that you can only nitpick about her voice and her enthusiasm on her show would hit you harder. Your cooking skills, if you have any, are irrelevant. At least the other "Ray-haters" here have more constructive criticism.

Better make sure your boyfriend is not hiding
her FMH spread under your bed.

and what is even worse is the fact that the food network looks at her, thinks america LOVES her and keeps giving her NEW SHOWS!!

She may not be a great chef but she has connected with and grown her audience. Her appeal started with the complete yet fast & easy meal approach which is a great alternative to McDonald's or take-out for suburban families. I think though her celebrity chat show put off a lot people... myself included.

I don't think she has ever claimed herself to be anything more than what her cooking is -- it's not like we're going to see her on Iron Chef America anytime soon. Her recipes and show are easy to follow, thus the huge appeal by 'normal' people. The only other show that comes close to hers in simplicity is Nigella Lawson's, but even some of the recipes she brings up are a bit out of reach (and taste) for most Americans (jello with real horse hoofs?!?).

Most professional chefs hate Rachel Ray.
A few weeks ago I met Sara Moulton (editor of Gourmet, original FoodTV goddess, began her career by working for JULIA CHILD, fer chrissake) and told Sara that I totally hated Ms. Ray. To my surprise, Sara Moulton agreed (not so professional of her?) and the two of us had a hearty bitchfest about the incompetence of Rachel Ray. It was one of the highlights of my small, insignificant life.

Can't stand her, her cooking is unhealthy and full of burgers. A real chef worthy of so many publications, books, TV shows etc would show America how to eat, rather than making things that reflect how America eats.
But if you do what I do (don't watch, don't buy, etc.) maybe we can all hurry up her demise.
She will self-implode in a few years I'm sure. At least that's what the Times article is hinting at.
It's no surprise she couldn't last here in New York not enough burger joints!

I have no problem with Ray, she does what she's suppose to do, get Americans comfortable with cooking. The food snobs are just elitist and jealous of her success, breaking their facade of superiority.

I loathe Racheaaeeael Ray. Mostly because of her freakish Kathy Bates hearty giggle/chuckle but for these reasons as well:

1. Yummo!
ok, what the? who says that? i mean, really.

2. EVOO
it's fine to make an acronym out of something, but don't then say 'Extra Virgin Olive Oil' immediately after saying EVOO. it kind of takes the point away, doesn't it?

3. GB
she just recently added GB (garbage bowl) to her list of annoying unneccessary acronyms.

yes, i loathe.

I'm not in the NY Times. And I totally make sure any tight shirts I wear aren't see-through.

As for Rachael Ray, I have very mixed feelings about Rachael Ray: She kills me with her voice and her recipes, but I admire her for showing that cooking doesn't have to be intimidating. However, Alton Brown does rule my world - I wish he were on during the Saturday and Sunday mornings.

"The Lady Emeril" seems about right. I can't stand either of them. Both of them are so full of themselves, so sure that they're cooler than they really are. Give me Alton Brown and "Good Eats" any day. Here's a guy who's a little bit of a nerd and he's not ashamed of it. And he knows a hell of a lot more about cooking than Rachael Ray ever will.
