The corner of Rivington and Clinton has always been a weird place-- but this week it has gotten a whole lot weirder-- all of the surrounding buildings have been redone in the style of Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s. Apparently this is all for a movie entitled "Across the Universe." Get this-- it's a Beatles musical, and Bono is one of the stars! We are just as confused as you are. Why, if the movie is set in the Greenwich Village of the 1960s, is it all done out in freaky-deaky San Francisco acid trip paint? To get to the bottom of all of this, we stopped by the set today-- but we just ended up more confused. Check out the pictures at Bluejake, and read more on the redecoration at Curbed.

Those pics are hilarious. Why hasn’t the NYPD taken action and deported these people out of state?
The last thing New York needs are more drum-beating, tree-hugging Beatniks.
Does federal law categorize attacking beatnicks as a hate crime?
Wait, am I supposed to get all angry that they're filming San Francisco scenes in NYC?
It looks a little like the Village, of yore, "Panama Red" or an "Acapulco Gold" ice cream cone's all you need. Corners stenciled with "Castrate Rapists"? That was the West Village. Big "Zum Zum" serving Bavarian fast food on Washington Square Park, near NYU, serving Hell and Dunkel beer, by Restaurant Associates, they do museums and the US Open now I read. East Village I guess it was called, near the Fillmore East back before there were officially 40,000 casualties on an black armband in white lettering, of those that died in Southeast Asia.
Julie Taymor and Evan Rachel Wood make this movie already worth seeing.
And Jackson: Rage on.
this guy with the huge hair and beard looks like a typical hipster gone wrong...yeah you know if the hipster scum neglected to move out of williamsburg to the next trendy neighborhood and never got a job or a grasp on reality. fools.
Nice post. You saw that gadling did a thing about Lennon today.

Hey! They were shooting a bit of it near my house! I took photos. You can check them out at www.flickr.com/photos/shahid/sets/1072473/ I wish Bono had come near my house! Maybe he'll be there when they shoot again this weekend.
Welcome to two weeks ago, Gothamist!
I am going to curb my initial impluse to rage, insult and complain. I go by there on the way to work every day, and it is a great chance to check out some nice old mircobuses.
Heh, they were filming earlier scenes for this up here at the Time & Life building in Rockefeller Center on Monday—50th street was lined with cars from the mid-60s and there were crowds of extras in skinny ties and pillbox hats. I took some photos:
