The MTA's Evacuation Train!

2005_10_evactrain.jpg

As the feds close in on the people who leaked the maybe, maybe not terror alert, Gothamist would like to take a moment to look at the MTA's evacuation plans for subway riders. If you go to their Evacuation procedure subpage, and you'll find links to videos and, better yet, some animated diagrams of what you should do in case of an emergency. Now, we want to know how many evacuation trains there are to pick people up. Clearly, it's time to go through NYC Subway.

CBS anchor Bob Schieffer gives Bloomberg credit for alerting the public about the possible subway terror, and surprise, surprise, the MTA's $212 million security plan was even $20 million more than they thought it would be.

how long would a rescue train take to reach the scene of an accident or terror attack? i mean, that's got to take an hour to restore power and get it out there-- wouldn't that be a bit too late?

Maybe the evacuation train is powered by lots of rats!

I think this is their standard emergency plan for trains that break down, fire on the tracks, etc. Might be useful in case of terrorism, but maybe not - would depend on the situation.

in the event of terrorism in the subway, i'm not sure any plan is going to do much good-- it's going to be a stampede no matter what.

Yes! if only the mta could harness the great untapped power of rats, foul odors and mysterious slime.

The arrows help.

I think the link should for NYC Subway is nycsubway.org not nycsubways.org.

There is no evacuation train, it's just another train that stops next to it.
