Have a Slice of Wedding Cupcake

001.jpg New Yorkers' love for cupcakes have made them a staple snack, sweet treat, or office birthday party surprise as the household names Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Magnolia Bakery, and Billy's Bakery spark visions of buttery sweet frosting, densely rich cake, and the playfulness of a childhood birthday party. Despite cupcakes' trendiness, last weekend when Gothamist was at a wedding, we were still surprised that in lieu of a wedding cake, the husband-and-wife to be opted for a cupcake tower!

002.jpg But, then we realized that it all makes sense. Cupcakes are pre-portioned and portable. You can offer different flavors with different frostings for all your different (and picky) guests. Mom can have red velvet with chocolate frosting while dad has vanilla with purple frosting and light green sprinkles. Uncle John can have 2 cupcakes or take a cupcake to go, and everyone can feel like a kid again. Cupcakes are also likely a more cost-effective option. While traditional wedding cakes from $4-6/slice, cupcakes hover around $1.50-2.50 apiece and are also easier to save or distribute if there are leftovers.

003.jpgSo if your wedding is fast approaching then cupcakes are a fashionable alternative to towering and tiered wedding cakes and can leave guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing with lips covered in frosting. NYC offers plenty of options to find your favorite cupcake, and while you're hunting for the perfect combination of flavors and frostings to please a wedding crowd, you might as well steal a few cupcakes for the road.

i think the world should move on from this cupcake craze. it's made enough people some serious $.

this 'trend' is already several years old. slow news day?

I agree. Enough with the cupcakes. Now, if you want a new fad, I think somebody should make puff pastry "wedding cakes." Who'd want a dry cupcake when they could have rich, flaky, custard-filled, chocolate-topped Napoleons?

My friend says that for his wedding he wants his wedding cake to be a large stack of Krispy Kreme donuts. That could be more interesting and perhaps much less expensive(?)

the wedding-cupcake trend is at least 5 years old -- we got married last year and have plenty of old wedding mags sitting around the house. donut wedding cakes have been done too.

Dont forget Cupcake Cafe! I think they are even better than Magnolia (and a little less overexposed)

We were married 3 weeks ago and had a cupcake wedding cake. The cupcakes were from Sage American Kitchen, and were outstanding. Unexpected for a chinese wedding, so people were pleasantly surprised it wasn't one of those lame cakes from C-town.

This is a GREAT Tip!! my friends got married upstate this past weekend. Instead of a cake they got 200 cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine. a steal at $300 and more than served 100 people. and everuone was raving about how wonderful they were (hands down better than any wedding cake I've ever had.) Sugar Sweet packed the cupcakes up in these awesome plastic containers so they were super easy to transport. they got different color frostings and the display was beautiful.

My citrus cupcakes are better than Magnolia or the Cupcake Cafe. The secret is... I'm not giving away my #1 requested recipe! Ha! Suckas.

My sister got married a month ago and since she is the cupcake kid (and was for years), that's exactly what the cake was: cupcakes.

You must all be really f'ing fat!

"Healthy," you dullard!

Jaydawg, I wonder if your citrus cakes are similar to mine? People react to them like crack cocaine. But yeah, I would wager that both of ours kicks the collective ass of all those Manhattan establishments.

In this month's Food and Wine, there's a lovely Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding recipe. I know Paula Dean has one too, but with all due respect, I think I'll be bringing the F&W one to my next brunch!

'You must all be really f'ing fat!'

Yes between NetFlix, FreshDirect and paying for bills online, there's very little reason for most yuppies to get off of their fat 'Forever 21' asses.

Sage American Kitchen did cupcakes for my wedding, too, about 18 months ago (and the food, too--it was all wonderful). Definitely not a new trend, but it sure was tasty.

I was wondering if a linkback would be possible for the bottom shot?

Keep up the amusing insights into NY life!

Well if anyone is still interested in wedding cupcakes they can check out the site provided. They have a few articles to read up on, some on decorating and a recipe.

Interesting you should mention the cup cake craze. Perchance (coincidence) I stumbled across this web page www.myspace.com/sweet_little_cake and noted that they, too, feature a wedding cake make of cupcakes as their background image - the same one that is the third image on this page... and I'm wondering, who actually made that cake? I know that this might seem trite, but I'm really interested to know ~ is there no honour among cupcake chefs?
