With Apple's announcement of the new video iPod, people will be able to watch TV programs (just ABC ones so far, so have fun with According to Jim and ) the day after after they are shown. For $1.99, you can watch what you could have Tivo'd or taped (if you have that clunky technology) on a tiny, tiny screen. Well, this video screen is slightly larger than the usual one, but come on, there's no way Lost will look at good on an iPod. Gothamist was hoping that this Apple press conference was going to be about a new iPod security feature that would be essential to urban dwellers who would want to protect their iPods. Like an old shell of a circa 1989 Walkman that be an iPod case. Anyway, it seems like this video iPod will be battling with the Playstation Portable as the "potential light sources in case of a train emergency."
The new video iPod will be offered at $299 (30 GB) and $399 (60 GB) - are you buying?

'but come on, there's no way Lost will look at good on an iPod.'
That's why you can hook it up to a TV and watch it.
Watching TV shows on demand without need for cable or a TiVO subsciption? Yeeeeeessss bboyyeeeee!
Well, at least the old ones will *hopefully* get cheaper...
Well, there's no subscription, but as soon as you buy more than 6 shows a month ($12 for Tivo) or 3 shows a month (Time Warner DVR) you might as well just get the DVR and enjoy the best of both worlds. Don't think this compares to a Tivo, because it doesn't!
Good news! Eventually people will be able to turn their heads into giant computer monitors.
There's hope for every person who can't bare the burden of being undistracted and left to their own thoughts for entire seconds at a time!
Infants and pacifiers.....
I'm a HUGE Apple junky and even I think I've had enough now. I haven't even had a chance to buy the Nano and it's not even teh newst thing anymore. Give us a chance to enjoy our technology before you make it obsolete!
As I can't stand iTunes, I won't be buying any of the new iPods. I'll stick with my old but trusty iRiver MP3 player. Though I have to say I was anxious to find out what Apple was planning for today, after all of the hype.
My next player will definitely include video playback. I have too many TV shows to watch these days, and if I could watch a few of them on the subway, like The Daily Show or the forthcoming Colbert Report, that would be way cool.

I wonder if it's as easy to scratch as the Nano?
I got a 30 GB Creative Zen Xtra for $150 at Buy.com. Great price, and I'm really happy with it. I can download an HDTV version of Lost off BitTorrent for free. I can't watch it on the go, but I can copy it to my Zen, and just watch it on my office computer. Screw the Video iPod!
I don't think it's a TiVO replacement, but for those of us who don't watch every show on TV and want to only keep up with certain shows, this is really great.
Between this and my DVD-Recorder I will be more than happy.
I like this quote, I think it is perfectly relevant:
"Old George Orwell got it backward.
Big Brother isn't watching. He's singing and dancing. He's pulling rabbits out of a hat. Big Brother's busy holding your attention every moment you're awake. He's making sure you're always distracted. He's making sure you're fully absorbed.
He's making sure your imagination withers. Until it's as useful as your appendix. He's making sure your attention is filled.
And this being fed, it's worse than being watched. With the world always filling you, noone has to worry about what's in your mind. With everyone's imagination atrophied, noone will ever be a threat to the world."
- Chuck Palahniuk
BTW, I cancelled my cable service today. Baseball season is over for me, no other reason to have TV. Winter entertainment at home will be reading books, painting, music, and watching movies from my 189-strong netflix queue.
Even with the TV out function though, it's not available in widescreen and high resolution so videos won't look good on a TV set. Will be best displayed on the iPod and/or computer screen. This WON'T replace TiVo/DVR; at least for the time being. By the way, the only really new and somewhat innovative technology here is the ability to download and purchase video content via iTunes; all else announced has pretty much been done before - albeit not in sleek Apple format.
They should've done the PowerBook G5 first...still waiting....
Great. Another new buggy Apple product.
Lorena, there will never be a PowerBook G5. Apple is moving their whole line to Intel-based CPUs since IBM can't come up with G5 chips that would work fast enough and cool enough in portable machines.
The PowerBook G4 is the only way to go until the PowerBook Centrino/Intel/x86/whatever comes out.
Then what's the point of buying a video-capable device? Just buy a portable hard drive, which will cost you less for more capacity. Or, believe it or not, every iPod can actually act as a portable hard drive, too. Do I get the impression you just want to do some kneejerk iPod bashing?
The problem I have with the constant upgrade in iPod technology, and I fear I have this problem with all technology, is that I feel disappointed with what I have when the new stuff comes out. I mean I got a 20G iPod when they first started coming out now they have iPod with photo capabilities and now this. As far as the video ones go I think it's a good idea but why can't we burn our DVD's to it. Why can we only download it? And if we pay for the download do they still give us the commericals to double up their profits on the unsuspecting iPod users? I'm not buying yet, but if they add more capabilities to it you can bet that I'll be in the market for an upgrade.
Pat> There are no commercials. And as far as constant new technology goes, true that once you buy a product it soon becomes outdated, but what's the alternative? No innovation so consumers can remain temporarily satisfied? I still have my 15 GB iPod from nearly 2 years and have no desire to "upgrade". Originally I wanted some music portably, and that's still the case.
The video portion is only the beginning - I imagine Jobs has a vision (as Gates does) of a whole networked home. Apple is dipping its feet into consumer electronics, which can be a fearful endeavor with the likes of Sony et al. This next year will be a culminating battle for the entire house. I admire Steve for taking a shot at it.
i mean, one could always just not upgrade. crazy talk, we know.
chuck palahniuk always struck me as something of an idiot.
Pat, you can rip DVDs onto the video iPod and watch them. It's just that Apple doesn't want you to so they don't tell you how but it's not that hard.
And dirt is right about this only being the first step. Everything Apple has done has been incremental - they started with the iTunes Store long before anyone thought the iPod was coming out, etc. And Mac Mini looks like it's going to evolve into a home entertainment center.
Sister> Actually, check http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/creatingvideo.html - Apple officially instructs on how to load a video file onto the iPod. Of course, it's an indirect way (of pulling from DVDs) but seems easy enough with the latest QuickTime. Speaking of the Mac mini, I love the hard drive LaCie came out with that literally attaches to the box!
THAT FOOS IS DELICIUS
yea its soooooooooooo good!
I found the food bland. It was served luke warm. No chips and salsa, unless paid for. A miracle I got served water. A shadow of a what true mexican restaurants can be. For a small restaurant, I thought the service was extremely slow and not really professional. In the end, I found the price was a total rip-off. The price for my meal was twice as more as what I've paid in the past. I have been fortunate to have visited "hole-in-the-wall" places that have actually given more for the buck. Castro's Mexican restaurant on Myrtle being one of these for example. It has been a while since I've left a restaurant so unhappy.
You guys are the 30753 best, thanks so much for the help.
