This Week's Music Picks

Jimmy Scott Antony and the Johnsons will play their first NYC show since winning the UK's Mercury Music Prize last month. The past year has seen Antony rise from a relatively unknown eccentric NYC club performer to an international superstar. His headlining show at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, and his upcoming appearance on Letterman, are two signs of his well deserved success. Those attending the Carnegie show will also be treated to a rare opening set by vocalist Jimmy Scott, "the man whom Joseph Hooper, in a New York Times Magazine profile, called 'perhaps the most unjustly ignored American singer of the 20th century.' [Fantasy Jazz].

Nomi Antony's Johnsons recently went through a lineup change. The most noticeable difference has been the lack of Joan Wasser, aka Joan as Policewoman (whom Antony once proclaimed brought more hits to his website than his own music), on strings. Further confirmation of her separation from the Johnsons comes from her headlining gig at Tonic the same night as Antony's show. CocoRosie just finished their role as opener and collaborator on Antony's North American tour. More likely to show up at Carnegie Hall than Joan, CocoRosie headline an Amnesty benefit at Tonic one night earlier. Perhaps Nomi, who also appears in Antony & Boy George's new video for You are My Sister, will be at Tonic singing Antony's part during CocoRosie's Beautiful Boyz (as she did at their recent Town Hall show). Either way, Nomi will be at Rothko on Saturday night where she headlines her own show. It's the record release party for Nomi's debut album, and if you missed Joan at Tonic, she also plays opener at Nomi's show. Boy George will most likely not be attending any any of these events.

Kelly Clarkson Other big non-Antony-related shows this week include the Fiery Furnaces at Town Hall, two shows by the New Pornographers at Webster Hall (Neko Case included), Kelly Clarkson at Hammerstein Ballroom, and the continuation of U2's run at Madison Square Garden. The M.E.A.N.Y. Fest and the D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival give us even more acronyms good shows worth taking a look at, and The Loser's Lounge will be channeling Stevie Wonder at Joe's Pub.

I just want to note that the show on Saturday at Northsix is part of Ladyfest East, not the DUMBO festival. There are also 2 more shows at Union Pool: Friday a bunch of punk bands, and Sunday Ida headlines a country jamboree with a DIY craft fair, burlesque, drag, the Roulette Sisters, and the Maybelles. Saturday also has a film screening (featuring the amazing documentary "Girl Wrestler" and some free workshops during the day. Check it all out at www.ladyfesteast.org.
