OHNY Is So Over. Next Up: Walking the Tunnel

2005_10_09_highbridge.jpg

And like that Open House New York is over(ish). Our general impression has been that the rain and icky weather really kept people away this year. But that's just our impression. Anyone have any good stories? Take, or find, any good pictures? That's what comments are for.

In the meantime, if you're already thinking about what in the world you are going to do next week might we point this out to you. As the kick-off for the Campaign to End AIDS march from New York to Washington, DC a tube of the Lincoln Tunnel is going to be pumped full of air and opened to the public. Public transportation back to Manhattan will even be provided. This is one of those random things that only becomes possible because of special events like this and/or epic disasters. As we're really not interested in another one of the latter, we're excited to get this chance now.

CORRECTION: The "nymphs" at Green-wood Cemetery were actually "angels."

I apologize for this misrepresentation (but don't angels have wings?).

  • I only went to Grant's Tomb this year so that I could climb up the rotunda. It was very cool, especially since I'm a big fan of the monument anyway. Photos are here.

    Nope!

Did the tour of the Chrysler Building go past the lobby?

Walk through the Lincoln Tunnel? Not if you paid me. What's the point? No scenery, stale air. A walk on the upper deck of the GW Bridge would get so many more participants.

There was a large crowd (100+ ?) at Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Outside the Steinway mausoleum, there was a pianist playing a grand piano that was apparently hauled in for the occasion. Apparently, it was also "open house" for the mausoleum which was opened for visitors to view. Nearby were four or five "nymphs" dressed in flowing grecian-type attire. Elsewhere there were several accordian players wearing 19th century garb. There was probably more that I didn't see.

Quite frankly, it was a bit surreal. I was there only because I go birding in Green-wood.

the rain definately kept people from the red hook canon tour. the only people who showed up were two OHNY volunteers (that's including myself) and Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club dude. you all missed a good tour!
