Rehnquist may not have been a judge prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, but he was assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Meiers is currently White House Counsel and formerly Asst. Chief of Staff for the White House. Seems to me that Rehnquist's background had more relevance to the Supreme Court than Meiers has.
