Dances with Pitchforks, redux

2005_09_artspitchforks.jpgGothamist caught last week’s performance of the “revival” of John Flynn’s Dances with Pitchforks and can’t stop talking about how good it is. Flynn’s tale of being a chorus boy in a Millburn, New Jersey regional production of Gypsy that featured über-diva and Eight is Enough stepmother Betty Buckley is too good to be true. And yet it is. AND on top of Betty Buckley the production featured the electric youthfulness of Deborah, neé Debbie Gibson. The show serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when you talk shit behind a leading lady’s back and also how that might just be the best method of building buzz around a Millburn, New Jersey regional production of Gypsy.

The show originally ran in 2002, after which point Flynn started writing and performing his next one man show, Themepark Superstar. He brought Pitchforks back for the NY Music Theater Festival and its final performance is Friday at 8pm. [UCB, 307 W. 26th St., $10]

Also, tickets are on sale now for the 2nd Annual New York Comedy Festival. The festival doesn’t take place until November 1-6 but they already have a line up that includes Denis Leary, Mario Cantone, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and even the Diceman will be cometh-ing. More acts have yet to be announced. Most tickets available thru Ticketmaster or check the NYCF website, some tickets are only sold through the venues.

What's with all the emphasis on the fact that this was a regional production in OMG! New Jersey of all places. The Paper Mill Playhouse is one of the most respected regional theatres in the country--not only did they do this star-powered production of Gypsy, but they also did a production of Sondheim's Follies that was critically acclaimed.
