New Yorker Festival Blogged

Over at Beatrice, Emily Gordon is blogging about this past weekend's New Yorker Festival. She puts Jonathan Franzen and Zadie Smith into the high school popularity paradigm, hears Steve Martin play banjo with Earl Scruggs and gets to revel in a Tom Cruise as dog impression. Gothamist didn't get to make it to this year's festival (we were a little slow to pull the intellectual cognoscentic trigger), but we will try to right that by getting the insane collection of 4,109 New Yorker issues on eight DVDs.

Did you go to the New Yorker Festival? Anything noteworthy? And this week's Shouts and Murmurs by Larry Doyle is priceless in sending up the somewhat interminably annoying "specials" at high-end restaurants.

saw the anarchy and animation talk with matt stone, trey parker, the aqua teen guys and the (among other things) incredibles guy. great panel. great discussion. even some decent questions from the crowd. it was great to see the aquateen guys up there who clearly felt that they were somehow up there with guys of a different league. but the great thing was that the others had an equally large amount of respect for them too, making it one big circle of animated love. and humor. all very funny guys. if not for brad ____ (the incredibles guy) being just a bit longwinded. excellent nonetheless.

Saw Jeffrey Eugenides and AM Homes on Friday and The Roots/Malcolm Gladwell on Saturday.

Love the way Eugenides weaves his story. The Roots/Gladwell thing discussion was decent though a little monotonous. The Roots played a pretty good set considering the audience was, as one of the waiters who got up to the mic during Q&A said, "a sea of white faces". Wish I'd gotten there earlier for the free Grey Goose though. Otherwise, no complaints.
