Crain's reports that Frank Gehry will be designing jewelry and tabletop items for Tiffany & Co. This is a big deal, as it's the first new designer Tiffany has "hired" in twenty-five years (Paloma Picasso was the last), but Gothamist is thinking one thing: Uncomfortable. While we expect Gehry to design something pretty awesome-looking like a hammered metal necklace or a warped vase ("Mr. Gehry...will work with precious metals, stones and wood"), we're not so sure it'll be practical. But that's not the point is it? Well, Gothamist would certainly buy a titanium Guggenheim-Bilbao shaped salt-and-pepper shaker set. Maybe the salt could be the Bilbao and the pepper could be the Disney Concert Hall!
Gehry will be designing the Brooklyn Nets arena; here's the Guggenheim's exhibition on him years back and he did win the Pritzker.

Gehry has designed a lot of great and unusual furniture in a variety of materials -- his cardboard chairs were/are very popular (google for Gehry "wiggle chair") -- and a collection of his furniture and other designs were recently the subject of a traveling exhibition. While most of the designs were pretty unusual, all were practical...
Ye Gods. I detest Gehry's overblown, impractical and egotistical work. When it comes to his buildings, he does not consider context, insisting that his thumbprint be evident, even in a great steaming pile of shit. The LA Disney atrocity superheats the apartments across the street and the building at Cambridge's MIT is a confusing, post-post-modern amalgamation of styles. If Tiffany thinks ugly is the new elegant, count me out. And what makes Gehry think he can design jewelry or house wares? He's an overrated moron that has turned himself into a name brand like Versace or Armani. I know there are better things to get pissed at these days, but such stupid indulgence in high-end design is just another example of Bush-era wealth worship. When consumers only want to go to museums designed by brand name architects, buy jewelry with pricey labels, and wear haute-clothing, there is something wrong with their priorities. It's a symptom of a sick, warped culture. And I can't take it anymore.
Brooklyn Boy is just angry he can't afford anything from Tiffany, Armani and Versace.
Brooklyn Boy-you need to get yourself a glass of wine & relax my friend.
Gehry's work is interesting, fascinating, adventurous, beautiful & optimistic.
You mention that "When consumers only want to go to museums designed by brand name architects, buy jewelry with pricey labels, and wear haute-clothing, there is something wrong with their priorities"...............I have news for you, it's been happening a long time & there's nothing wrong with it:)
People like beautiful objects created by brilliant people.
p.s.-Gehry's architecture is always built with deep consideration for it's surroundings.
