To Drink, Perchance, While Underage at Columbia

Gothamist was reading the Columbia Daily Spectator, trying to recapture our youth (we are getting OLD), when we stopped at this headline: "New Policy Will Hurt Columbia Fanbase." Forget what the new policy is... Gothamist was surprised that Columbia's sports team actually had fanbases. There are alumni, yes, but fans? In our day, Gothamist would call them "fellow students." Anyway, the new policy is that Columbia is not allowing tailgating at football games, and making the legal drinkers buy beer from a new designated concession area. Hey, anything to put more money into the endowment! Here's some advice from Gothamist: Become a part of your dorm's house committee, getting the funding and throw illicit parties in the basement.

The other article of note would be how the area bars in Morningside Heights are really cracking down on IDs after the police have raided establishments repeatedly. One Barnard sophomore says, "I’m afraid to go back to the bars...I feel like it’s part of the college experience that we’re missing out on." Well, you could always transfer to NYU, because if NYU is Las Vegas and Sodom, then Columbia is its Atlantic City and Gomorrah-lite. And at NYU, upperclassmen are upset that two dorms are becoming freshmen-only, limited the number of close-to-campus dorms. Well, that's what happens when you call "most of downtown" campus.

No drinking at Columbia??? SACRILEGE!!

I remember orientation week (1986-boy am I old!!!!) going to what was then the West End (then West End Gate, then gone...) with two fellow freshmen (or were we "First Year," I forget when that PC crap movement kicked in...) Andy, now a Rabbi, and Danny, now one of NYC's top realtors, walking up to the bar all confidently, keeping my fake ID in my wallet, ordering a pitcher of Beck's Dark, and when asked how many glasses, replying, 1....

The other two high-fived each other, slapped me on the back and we each had a pitcher...

And then there were the funnels in the dorm with Andy (the Rabbi) and Black & Tans with the Philolexian Society...

Then the flaming shots of Everclear with Andy (the Rabbi) and Danny (the broker) that I brought back from Virginia where I really learned to party at U. Va during Easter's Weekend...

And then there was the great discovery of the "Gargantuan Cafe" and their, strangely enough, Happy Hour from 11PM-1AM on Saturday!!! Double drinks for $2.00 each, top-shelf no less!!

I guess that's why they are all long gone...

Columbia without underage drinking is like a day without sunshine!!! or Moonshine!!!

The crackdown on fake IDs happens almost every year. It really shouldn't be news to anyone who's not currently an underage student there.

Are you KIDDING ME????

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Some of my best/funniest memories from college are when my friends and I were completely obliterated at Homecoming. My sophomore year, I was taking care of one of my best friends (she was hammered), and as we're trying to maneuver back to our friends who were sitting down and actually watching the game, and she trips/stumbles and ends up pouring her entire soda over the president of the alumni association, falling on him, and smearing him with the mustard from her hot pretzel. My roommate senior year got so drunk when i brought her to homecoming that she slept through her babysitting job she had that evening and had to pretend there was a family emergency. All of my friends who went to other schools (even heavy drinking ones like Colgate) cherish their memories of Columbia Homecomings past. Good luck getting people to come to future Homecomings...I for one won't be there.

i went to homecoming once and tailgated and all that and thought it was pretty lame. columbia bars are always "cutting down" on fake IDs/underage drinkers. boo hoo. get out of morningside heights and enjoy the rest of the city. that's why you came to columbia anyway, right?

what's homecoming?
isn't this something small towns do?
are people excited about the CU football team that there's even a homecoming?
I remember their players as bullies and infamous for their longest losing streak. (ok, I'm dating myself, 1988)

Oh, the exploits of the dashing rich, and their mobile cousins from under the bridge.

I guess not even the middle class young can afford to live in the city anymore by the way Gothamist and all the other blogs sound. Not that anyone should ever hide their identity.

Hey, remember when the Marlin would serve anyone...? that old bartender really turned a blind eye.

West End is still there! Even the medical campus folks know about it.

When I first went to the Marlin they would certainly serve anybody, but then the drinking age was still 18. Whether the drinks had any alcohol in them was the issue.
