This Week's Music Picks

There are some important shows this week. It's your last chance ever to see Q and not U (@ Knitting Factory). Brian Jonestown Massacre (whose gear was stolen the other day) are at the very small Pianos. Steve Winwood is at the very small Bowery Ballroom. Yesterday Bon Jovi rocked the very small Nokia Theater. These shows all matter, but they're not the focus of this week's post . Instead, let's concentrate this week on Hurricane Katrina survivor benefits.

Elton John The biggest of all benefits happens tonight (Tuesday). "From the Big Apple to the Big Easy" takes place simultaneously at Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. While the Radio City show is stuffed with jam bands like Dave Matthews, Trey Anastasio, Galactic, Tom Waits, and John Mayer, MSG will appeal more to the over-50 crowd with names like Bette Midler, Jimmy Buffet, Elton John and Simon & Garfunkel. If you can't make it, you can watch the MSG show on pay-per-view. Full lineups and TV info at the official benefit website.

Wynton Marsalis Tonight is also a fundraiser with Yo La Tengo, Deborah Harry, and others at the Angel Orensanz Center for the Arts (tickets only available at the door). Saturday night you've got two more benefit choices. Wynton Marsalis headlines "Jazz for Hurricane Relief" at BB King's Blues Club (tickets and more info.), and big names like Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, and Woody Allen will appear at Town Hall for the New Yorker's "Parting the Waters" benefit (tickets & more info). These events might be pricey, but how much have you donated so far? Give AND hear good music.

And now the day by day...
