Striking Out in Toronto

2005_09_sjeter.jpgJaret Wright might want to see if he can get a protective screen placed in front of the mound. Three weeks ago it was a ball that hit him, on Sunday it was a piece of a broken bat. Both collisions forced him out of ballgames and both ended in Yankee losses, the latest a 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays.

Sunday’s game looked like it would be over early as Toronto jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Yankees battled back on an Alex Rodriguez home run and were down only 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth. But, Toronto added an insurance run against the soft part of the Yankees bullpen (anyone not named Rivera or Gordon) and Derek Jeter struck out with the tying run on second to end the game.

The loss leaves the Yankees 1 1/2 games out of both the division lead and a wild card spot. They return home Monday to play the Orioles for four games and then the Blue Jays over the weekend.
