A post above says some firms hire freelancers to avoid paying insurance and other benefits. This statement ignores the fact that a paycheck is a benefit. And for some history, firms didn't offer insurance until the Federal government inflicted wage/price controls during WWII and firms got around this by offering health insurance as a form of salary. O

Most of the freelancers I know are only freelancers until they can get a legit. FT job with all the trimmings. mmm mm!

Most of the cable TV networks in town (MTV, VH1, etc.) hire permalancers who work full time hours. That way they don't have to pay insurance or other benefits.

They forgot the statistic that more than half are not freelancers by choice--it's because their places of work have many "permalance" workers. These workers are ineligible for health insurance, unemployment insurance and retirement benefits, and pay much higher taxes.
