Yesterday, the city announced that the funding for the Coney Island Strategic Plan is now $83 million, in order to make America's Playground the glittering weekend destination is used to be. The city added $50 million to the funds, plus $7 million from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and $3.2 million from Congressman Jerrold Nadler, in hopes of adding new attractions and improving the infrastructure; here are some of the major points:
- The transformation of Stillwell Avenue into Stillwell Midway, a spectacular public open space connecting existing amusements with new development. So there will be a lot of rezoning, but the city seems, so far, to be committed to making sure there are affordable options for residents as well as creating jobs.
- A redesigned Steeplechase Plaza incorporating new open space around the iconic Parachute Jump between KeySpan Park and the boardwalk. It will feature the winning design of the Parachute Pavilion Design Competition by the London team of Kevin Carmody, Andrew Groarke, Chris Hardie and Lewis Kinneir.
- An increase of year-round activity on Surf Avenue including the possible addition of a hotel and spa.
- The establishment of a multicultural community center that will contribute to making western Coney Island a vibrant residential neighborhood and provide essential job training and community services.
- The development of affordable housing on City-owned property in the residential area.

They forgot to mention the new name: "Corny Island".
I'm waiting for the promise to preserve Ruby's, Shoot the Freak, the mermaid parade, and of course Astroland/Deno's...

Yes, because a lame job is so much worse than no job at all.
I always thought the Mermaid Parade was a tremendous bore, but I generally hate parades. That said, I hope there's still a place where we can bump, bump, bump our asses off.
Why is the Gothamist always so pro big real estate developments, at least in tone?
Coney Island... let it go people. let it go.
LOL. So true...
why is everyone always the loudest when it comes to putting a plan down, however we never saw or heard fom these people for the past 30 years while coney island was suffering misserably.
You guys are the 64643 best, thanks so much for the help.
Coney Island needs a drastic change . I think people dont want to see it happen because they want Coney Island labeled as a tough place , Coney Island where the warriors play ! I grew up across the street from The Cyclone , just looking at Sitts plan for Coney Island is unbealivable I love the idea and the plan . Im with the change and I hope it happens
i am looking at possibly moving into a new construction on stillwell ave. i have to say the area still scares me? is it worth it?
i have been in the area for over 30 years and have always been down there during the seasons, Coney Island doesn't need a makeover it only needs a facelift. Along with the new renovation there is going to be a higher price to pay. What about us little people. Leave the big stuff to the big people, we need a bigger theme park for children of all ages.
Why don't you use the areas buildings that are run down to reopen them as community centres and offices for nonprofit organizations that devise ways to care for the aged, poor, and disabled ? Why not use these old boarded up buildings for warehouses that you can use to ship unwanted household items and food to 3rd world countries ?
