i'm actually disappointed to read this. ferrer is lame, and while i won't vote for bloomberg i can't bring myself to vote for freddy "the amadou diallo incident wasn't a crime" ferrer.

NY1: Election officials say after all the absentee ballots are calculated, which could take until next week, there may still be a runoff by law if Ferrer does not get that 40 percent.

Actually, the polling I've seen (I work in politics) shows that Ferrer would have beaten Weiner in a rout. Weiner's camp had to know that, too, and wisely chose to avoid a runoff. Better for Weiner to dust himself off for 2009 than to be seen as the spoiler limiting Ferrer's already limited chances against Bloomberg. I think he comes off as looking classy. Nicey, I agree with you.

I *think* a candidate can withdraw and eliminate the need for a run-off. In Either case, who ever runs against Mayor Bloomberg has an uphill battle.

Is he allowed to do that? He can drop out if he wants, but he can't change the rules re: a run-off: if no one gets over 40%, then there's a run-off. Would Virigina Fields then stand in a run-off?

my. god. this is pathetic. Weiner could possibly defeat Ferrer in a runoff (considering he could pick up much of the Fields/Miller/Brodeur votes), yet he's going to back down now? COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. AND COWARDLY. I hate all the candidates now. And politics in general. hate hate hate hate hate them. Please put these people in a boat out in the harbor and sink it.
