We're about to dive head first into the CMJ music marathon. Honestly, there are ALWAYS a lot of shows to go to in this city. This week, however, there are more shows with open bars and more bands that aren't from Brooklyn.
Ultimately we'd like to see some old favorites along with some hidden gems we've never heard before. If you have any suggestions to point us in the right direction, by all means leave a comment. Otherwise, stay tuned for a day by day recap of where we end up and which bands leave us going "yay", "nay" and "eh".
Tonight we're going to start it off right by going to Gothamist contributer Brooklyn Vegan's pre-CMJ show at Tonic. The lineup is great, and goes like this...
Dave Deporis (8:30pm)
Aziz Ansari
Doveman
Aziz Ansari (again!)
Cloud Cult
The proceeds will be donated to hurricane relief efforts.
See you out there...

Hey. Every year I end up broke right before CMJ. This year I did something about it! I've compiled a list of all free shows during CMJ this year. Check it out at my site: www.wordsnrhymes.com.

Check out Sam Roberts. Sept. 14th at the Mercury Lounge. www.samrobertsband.com
Very cool, very good Canadian rock.
The Evil Queens (Columbus, OH) Friday night at Midnight at Pussycat Lounge Downtown. The Detroit Metro Times said this: "They’re more rock than Queens of the Stone Age and more roll than the White Stripes. So, think of Columbus, Ohio’s the Evil Queens as a collaborative manipulation of rock ’n’ roll’s past and near-present...Singer Jacob Sundermeyer draws comparisons to a throatier, less pretentious Dave Grohl."
Sigur Ros is tonight; what are you kids thinking?!
Dirt - Saw em last night and they were AMAAAAAAZING.
Nice, Mike. Heard the show was kickin'. Thanks for warming 'em up for me!
Tonight for FREE at 11pm there's a GREAT band from Reading, England called Desdemona at Ace of Clubs (formerly under Acme - Great Jones just off of Lafayette).
DO NOT miss Brooklyn's own Grizzly Bear at Pianos tomorrow night. (www.grizzly-bear.net for info and mp3's too). Beautiful, enchanting, folk-ish, loud and quiet at the same time, SPECTACULAR!
Dogme 95 (members of the Polyphonic Spree and Dirty Projectors) are playing with the Cabinet of Natural Curiosities on Saturday at the Rockwood Music Hall. It should be an interesting show.
