This Week's Music Picks

arcade fire It's CMJ week in NYC. Arcade Fire, Devendra Banhart, Lady Sovereign, Feist, Nouvelle Vague, Doves, The Wrens, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Cursive, !!!, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady, Brian Jonestown Massacare... we can't even begin to list everything going on. Why should we? CMJ's listings reveal everything you need to know. Further inspection of CMJ.OhMyRockness.com lets you in on even more. The CMJ archives at BrooklynVegan will clue you in even further, and Central Village's itinerary has more than enough to keep you busy. Instead we'll focus on a few select non-CMJ shows happening during CMJ.

cloud cult It all starts Tuesday night at Tonic with Cloud Cult, Doveman, Dave Deporis, and comedian Aziz Ansari. (Read the Gothamist interviews with Doveman and Aziz) Last time Cloud Cult was featured in this Gothamist post, they weren't actually playing. This time you have our personal guarantee that Tuesday night's headliner is in fact the most underrated band in NYC this week. While Arcade Fire have reached primetime TV status, you still have the chance to experience Cloud Cult in a very small room. There's an excellent roster of openers to boot. Yes, we (the writer, not the website) produced this now-for-charity show. Listen to Cloud Cult. Tickets are still on sale.

voxtrot Skip to Friday. You've got back-to-back options in two boroughs. Straight from work you'll want to head to Tribeca Rock Club for the Loose Record and WOXY sponsored concert featuring four fine entertainers. Voxtrot, Chin Up Chin Up, Dios, AND The Cribs will entertain you until 9pm, and all for only $8 at the door. You might remember Voxtrot. Gothamist reviewed their show at Rothko. From there you'll want to make the commute to Brooklyn where The Vaz, Dirty on Purpose, A Place to Bury Strangers, Youth Group, and the Lovemakers all play a Williamsburg roof party for the low-low price of only $5.00. If you miss Youth Group this time, you can always catch them at Hammerstein Ballroom in October when they open for Death Cab for Cutie.

Saturday night stay out late with DJ Diplo Low Budget (Hollertronix), Bun B, and dj Assault. It's a free party at Southpaw in Park Slope. Presented by The Fader, Triple 5 Soul, and Turntable Lab, you'll need to check Southpaw's listings for all the information you need to RSVP and get your ticket.

End the week supporting a good cause at Irving Plaza with the amazing lineup of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Jesse Malin, Debby Harry, Joseph Arthur, Butch Walker, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and Marah. The $35 ticket price for the Sunday show at Irving Plaza goes towards Hurricane Relief.

Arcade Fire, ooh never heard of them. So glad you mentioned them they are great, did you read about them on the internets?

Funny how these always turn out to be big plugs for Brooklyn Vegan's site. Funny.

Bowie is rumored to appear with AF tomorrow...

AF, King, is short for "Arcade Fire" - quirky canucks that bang drums and sing about neighborhoods.

was the Cursive mention a misprint, as i don't see them on CMJ's roster... it's serious talk to say that they're playing in town...

not to be "funny" and "plug" my own site or anything, but:

I haven't been up to anything today. I don't care. I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. Basically not much happening right now. Maybe tomorrow. I guess it doesn't bother me.

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen, but I don't care. Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I can't be bothered with anything recently.
